Question Brighter 3rd brake light bulbs?

Anyone found or used some brighter bulbs for the 3rd brake light? Do they trigger the ABS INOP light? I've got a Z28 overlay for the lens, but the bulbs seem to be a bit too dim...

Not sure anybody makes whatever bulbs those are (can't remember now) in a "brighter" version.
If you got brighter bulbs anyways, might it light the overlay a lot more also? So it would shine more through it, but you could also see a lot of the overlay.

Re: Brighter 3rd brake light bulbs?

This is something I found ..... Not sure if there is a higher wattage one...

921 Blue:

This bulb is for those of you who want to have a hyper white third brake light bulb or want to replace your third break light bulb. This bulb is like any other hyper white bulb and is much stronger than a standard 921 bulb. This bulb can also be used as a 194 or 168 bulb for a brighter look. The bulb is larger than a standard 194 or 168 bulb. Bulb makes third break light brighter.

LED's are probably gonna cause an ABS problem.

I don't know how to solve the ABS INOP problem, but if anyone on here does, here is a link to a great LED site: www.superbrightleds.com

how would led's cause an abs problem? especially if you just make it how the other guy made the dome lights with leds, not like the computer is gonna know?

The computer just does... The ABS system draws some type of input from the 3rd brake light itself, and a light with different voltage has been known to trigger an ABS INOP light on the cluster.

I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything and knows if it'll work or not. Thanks for all the replies guys.

Couldn't you jut throw in a resistor, like with the third brake light fix for the 98+ SS Wings?

Re: Brighter 3rd brake light bulbs?

You can add a resistor but i've heard people say the resistors get very hot and can melt stuff and kind of be dangerous all tucked up in there.

Re: Brighter 3rd brake light bulbs?

Couldn't that all depend on the type of resistor you get? Also why couldn't you put a resistor up there and wrap some heat shield around it and tuck it up in there. Maybe a couple resistors in series would keep the heat down?

Re: Brighter 3rd brake light bulbs?

This was just posted on our local board.

Quote from Garyz28
"a few months ago i posted about how my ABS INOP light stayed on after i installed my new spoiler. well, today i fixed the problem. i started underneath the car checking all the ABS connectors. they were just fine. i did find that the wire bundle the sensor is in was a bit fried from contact with the header. after i repaired the wire the light still remained on. frustrated as all can be i asked my good buddy google. found a post on a website from a guy that put the same style spoiler on an LT1 Camaro. he went on about how the ABS system won't recognize the LEDs that are in the new spoiler so it pops off the light thinking that their is no third brake light on the car. this can also happen if bulbs burn out he says. his fix after he found this out was to reinstall the wires from the old spoiler in where he spliced in the new one. i figured what the hey and dug out the factory spoiler, gutted it of its wires and spliced it in. and wouldn't you know it, it worked. so for all LT1 Camaro folk that want to put a 98 and up SS style spoiler on your car remember this. it may be a bit ghetto to have the wires from the stock piece sitting under the plastic, but if it works!!!!!!!!!!"

Not that it helps.
