Best way for HID's on a 72 camaro
We are restoring a 1972 camaro want to upgrade the headlights. I found this something on ebay by searching "72 camaro projector" and found something but for only 2 dollars somethings fishy. We really want to put hid's in it but would like a more modern headlight housing. Anyone have any experience with this. Thanks
To just install HIDs themselves would require some custom bracket work I imagine, but then you would have that non-OEM headlight look because there would be no projector.
I am trying to picture how this could work. I'm wondering if there is a way for you to cut the back of a sealed beam headlight out and put the HID bulb inside it?
In the end it would be something like this:

Different bulb, same sealed beam look.
Any idea where you can mount your ballasts? Sorry I can't help you more.

You can get HID Bulb conversion kits, but as stated with a sealed beam you'd have to cut open the sealed beam light and match up to closest bulb size.
I know the 93-97 4th Gens actually use 9005 & 9006 bulbs, so you can heat them up and then swap them out. Not sure about a 72 though.
Another option would be a custom build with something like a Hella or some other aftermarket light. Hella has quite the selection of round lights, you may actually find one that's very close in size to current lighting.
Last option would be to keep the existing headlights and and mount some driving lights into the front grill, and if you wanted even go HID in those.

You can do a composite headlamp kit and then buy a hid kit with the right bulb for the composite headlamp. Heres a link to the composite headlamp kit, you may be able to just buy the housing and then buy an hid kit seperate. Not as good as a projector set-up but its an option.

If you want it done right, and not some knock off while appearing close to stock in appearance, it is going to cost you. For HID to work right, it has to been in a housing designed for HID. This means projector...period.

So great for additional light, but really bad for the main headlight
You'll never see anything except what's directly in front of you
Not all hid headlights are in projectors , IS300, GS300, Nissan Maxima, and many others come from the factory non projector. The projector is the best choice since it does produce a crisp cutoff, but it can be a pain to retrofit them into another housing while making them function properly and look good too.

i have h4 conversion 4x6 housings with bi-xenon hid in them now. it has a damn good shield in it...when u flick to hi beam the bulb moves and shoots the light upward for high beam.
next step: buying these, and mounting them inside my h4 conversion housings. then use another hi beam hid kit for the inside lights.

So you're suggesting flooding the road directly in front of you with light, but you STILL WON'T SEE THE DEER RUNNING FROM THE SIDE UNTIL IT HITS YOU (OR BETTER YET THE PERSON ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (TILL YOU HIT THEM))...

You are missing the point... It's not just about how bright the light is, it has to do with where it goes...
and not having a wider beam light you're missing the edges of the road, which is just plain stupid...
But hey you go ahead and build your light setup any way you want, but pardon me if I don't follow you're advice here....

I am not talking about throwing as much light as possible on the road in front of you, you can get fogs that will surpass stock headlights in field of view to the sides and in front of the car WITHOUT blinding oncoming traffic. CATZ MSR's or MSP's were a great example of a light that did just that, you could run them with your headlights off and not notice the difference. You also never had issues with oncoming traffic being blinded.I won't be offended since I never stated this was is his only option, my word is gospel or any other presumption you have made from my post. Again you ASSume too much.

Glad to see the mentality of the lounge is still filling the posts of the Appearance section after all these years.
