anyone now the workings of a neon underbody kit?
ive got a friend that has a neon underbody kit. i installed it about a year ago. the kit is a few years old. anyway its acting weird, turn it on and itll stay on for a few seconds to a few minutes then cut off. let it sit for a little bit then itll turn back on. its sporacted and not the same each time. i felt the transformer and its not hot and the wires on the car dont seem loose. but im still thinking maybe the transformer is just going bad. so has anyone had this happen to them or does anyone happen to know how to test the transformer to see if its bad? thanks Trey
I had a set on my V6 camaro. If it's been a fewyears since they were installed, I'd say they're just dying. Mine didn't last long at all, and most "burn out" pretty quick. As far as the transformer, I'd say you could check it with a voltmeter, and see if it is putting out any juice. A wire could have also been damaged/shorted.
When this happened to me, I just replaced the inline fuse between the transformer and the switch. If your friend has an inline fuse, try this first. It saved me the money of buying a new transformer.
To test the transformer itself, I believe that all you have to do is unhook one of the tubes, and place the wire at one end to one of the outlets on the transformer, and the other wire to the other outlet (that is, if it's a Street Glow kit. I'm not sure on Lite Glow, or other brands...). I made a diagram, if you want to see it.

the neon cathodes are funny like that sometimes, check for a loose ground wire (my friends problem) the transformers do get incredibly hot though especially when you keep them in the engine bay. Personally i would do away with the cold cathode neon kit and go with the LED underbody kits, you can hook up 8 per controller, they draw a fraction of the power that cathode neons draw, if the casing cracks they will still workjust superglue or epoxy the crack, theres no transformer an theres alottttt of light pattern effects, i kno alot of people will scream rice but to each his/her own
you don't even need a transformer.
take the "positive" wires and connect them all. Then run a hot wire to that positive wire. Connect all your negative wires to some negative spot on the car.
GUARANTEED it will work. Plus mine is much brighter since this happened. I'm actually running 2 sets of underbody neons, same color, and neither have a transformer. They have worked fine for almost a year.
Transformer=not needed
