are there any alternatives out there for replacement antenas, like something shorter? I even think I will just take it off altogether since I never use the radio

You can remove it completely and get a hidden antenna.

If it's a solid antenna you cna go with a power antenna.
You can also remove it and use the small cell style antenna.

I saw several months ago someone else on this board created their own shorter antenna. After getting a donor antenna from a retired van at work I did shortened one myself. Pretty easy process in all honesty. Though I do recommend getting a donor incase you don't like the results or mess up.

First pull off the ball on the end, I used a vise-grip pliers, left marks on the ball where the jaws clamped on. Cut the antenna to the desired length. You'll have to taper the new end slightly since the whole antenna is a very slight taper the new end will be fatter then the tip. Put a dot of superglue on the tip and put the ball back in place.

I cut mine a little too short, in my opinoin, at about 12.5 inches. Notice a slight loss in long distance station reception but since I listen to CDs 99.9% of the time no harm, no foul!

I just installeda billet antenna on my car. It looks way better. Its chrome and is just a little over a foot in length. I got at my friends shop. Not cheap though but looks better. If your not willing to spend money try shortening it like others said.
