Lightbulb Alternative headlight bulbs

Im sure everyone noticed that the camaro uses sealed beams for the headlights. And when you replace them, you have to buy the whole glass housing with it.. But I also noticed that the actual headlights are 9006 C8 bulbs that are used on plastic housing headlights (such as those found on MN12 tbirds/cougars) These bulbs are easily detachable from the glass housing so I was wondering if it was possible to take them out and put Sylvania's Silverstar 9006 bulbs into the glass housing as an alternative to PIAA or HELLA lights that most people put on their camaros as an alternative.

I would respond with a resounding YES.

Re: Alternative headlight bulbs

If your happy with a brighter stock antiquated sealed beam pattern. Anything to get more light in front of the car helps but the beam pattern on my Hella 90mms is soooooo much better than the sealed beams I've been happy with the 65w H9s for the last 3 yrs. And I haven't had a bulb burn out yet. When I ran 80/100w H4s in a set of Cibie Z-Beams on a Fiat Spyder I was swapping in new bulbs about twice a year. Maybe the 9006s being seperate hi/low housings will help them last longer but its something to think about since ya gotta glue a new one in every time one burns out.

Re: Alternative headlight bulbs

I would love to get a hella setup, but the fact is, $$ is kinda tight, and like ive stated in my other post about my engine prob. Ive already spent inexcess of 2k in repairs on the car.. I just dont have the funds to pay $6X for a single 90mm module . Is it absolutely necessary to remove the glass front of the housing to install the 9006 bulbs? Anyone know how much brighter the Sylvania Silverstars are? I think ive seen them once intown on an 89 beretta and they give some sort of weird colored glow around the beam but havent seen how much better they light up the road short of going into the Hella setups.

Silverstars didn't give me any better light output, they simply changed the stock yellow color to a cleaner white.

If you want better light output with the stock housings, you'll need to push as much wattage out of them as possible.

With a lot of testing with the stock units, I've found 80w clear Luks to give the best performance, for much less than most tinted bulbs.

Excellent advice. Go with 80w to 100w bulbs, and a heavy duty headlight harness to maintain voltage.

i've got the Luks 100w/80w OEM units runnning on a new harness. they are decently brighter.

when money allows i plan to try some of their halogen pieces and get some decent comparison pics.
