alright so spraypaint was a bad idea
alright so spraypaint was a bad idea
well i was told "oh, spraypaint is easy, cheap, and works just fine" when it came to painting a berger panel
well guess what, it looks like crap. i guess i'm just not ghetto enough
how much is the primer and flat black paint to do the rear panel like that? i might have a friend with some "professional" painting stuff that would work.
of course i'd prolly have to sand all this crap off again

Re: alright so spraypaint was a bad idea
You have to sand it and buff it for it to look half decent
Take some 1200 grit, wet it down real good, and sand smooth (not hard) then redo the process with 2000 grit, or fine finishing paper, smooth it out (keep paper WET). Take some medium rubbing compound, and rub the paint vigorously. This will restore the shine, then buff it with a clean towel, and wax.

$5 can of paint. Flawless.

Re: alright so spraypaint was a bad idea
i can't seem to get the paint to come out even.
i go past the panel both ways, i'm about 9 or 10 inches away from the surface, and i'm overlapping each pass
and its still uneven ... maybe it takes a bunch of coats? i've got like two coats on there now and its so-so.

I would do aroun 6-8 very light coats.. You dont want to try and do it with one or two coats. It WILL come out uneven and possibly runny.. After you have the coats applied, then wet sand and buff it out with a high speed buffer...
Re: alright so spraypaint was a bad idea
Screw all that initial sanding crap. Go to Autozone and buy some aircraft stripper, and DO NOT GET IT ON ANYTHING ELSE. Gets everything off, down to bare fiberglass. Then get yourself some sandable primer, and go to town. When you have that thing nice and smooth and all the little lines are either filled or sanded down, hit that baby up with some matte black / semi gloss paint. Let it dry between coats, for an hour or two at least. I did this in the hot august sun, don't know how well it will work in january. I have 6 or 7 coats on mine, and then I hit it with a low gloss clearcoat a few times. Looks perfect, and my friend has a real Berger I can compare it too.
