I'm looking for a kit with the racing stripes for a 92 camaro, and I found it on 3rdgendecals.com for $145, but then I also found one on ebay for $40.

I'd obviously much rather save the 100 bucks and buy it off ebay, but my question is will the quality be worth it? I don't want them to chip and peel away.

Of course, the ones from 3rdgendecals.com does include the pinstriping around the large stripes whereas the ones in that auction do not. Guess it depends on if you want the pinstripes or not.

 

I looked at his site and he is using 5 year vinyl which means it is CHEAP vinyl. The vinyl that you would get at 3rdgendecals.com is a cast 7 to 10 year vinyl... typically AT LEAST 3 times the cost of the 5 year stuff. With that being said, even though it says 5 years, that is on a VERTICAL surface and not horizontal like how the stripes will actually be laid.

Get the ones from 3rdgendecals.com IMO.

On a vertical surface 5 year vinyl should last around 1 to 2 1/2 years depending on the color of the vinyl and color of the car, how often it sits in the sun, UV light dry's out the vinyl.

 

yeah, I decided it's worth spending the extra money. I knew nothing about the 5 year stuff, so thanks for your input on that. But I also want the pinstriping around it, and on it also comes in a metallic silver vs the non-metalic from ebay, which would match my metallic paint better.
Another question, can the vinyls be removed without ripping the paint off?
And I heard somewhere not to put wax on the vinyls, is that bad too?

Waxing over vinyl is fine. Just use a little caution when "scrubbing" around the sharp edges so the rag doesn't catch it just right and lift it up slightly. This most likely won't be a problem with the kit you are looking at but can be an issue with like the 35th kits that have the sharp cornered checkered pattern throughout the stripe.

 

Another thing to keep in mind too is thickness. Sometimes the vinyl is going to be really cheap and thin, which will lead to it ripping and chipping a lot easier from normal use. The quality vinyl is some 82mm or something like that from what I was told awhile ago.

CHEAP vinyl is THICK. The expensive high quality vinyl is very thin and delicate until applied. The highest quality cast vinyl is only 2 mil thick. The inexpensive calendered vinyl is usually 3 mil. I don't know of any vinyl that is 82 mil... that's like a sheet of plywood
