78 spoiler/hood scoop

yea i have a 78 Z/28, and Im thinking of molding the spoiler with the body when i have the body work done so it looks all like one peice and not just a stuck on spoiler. i want to t=do this with the hood scoop too. any reason why it would be a bad idea or not work?

The problems you will face on each, are cracking where you bond the part on
the car. Unless you make it out of metal, and weld it on, the two materials
are not going to expand and contact in the heat of the sun the same. This is
going to eventually cause a crack at the bond point. We went with an early
70's spoiler on our budget 78 Camaro project. I dont care for the tall 3 piece
spoiler that was on the 78 Camaros. The short one "flows" better in my mind.
No matter which design you go with, the trunk seam will disrupt the fit. You
will have to either have a one piece that "floats" over the fender, or a three
piece like the factory. There is a "tall" spoiler available for the 94-96 Impala
SS that you might be interested in copying the design of, though it still has to
"float" over the fender.

I've molded a 2nd gen spoiler into the body on both my 3rd gens...Both times i've ended up with a small crack at each end on the deck lid.

My father has also done it with his 71 trans am.He's had great success and it hasnt cracked in the past 15 years.

so tom you put an early 70 spoiler on a later 70s? that sounds pretty neat because i dont really like how the spoiler on the 78 "comes apart" when you open the trunk. i like how the early 70s float over the fenders. could you send me a picture of the car with the spoiler you put on i? id like to see how it looks.

Sure, if you dont mind, I can just take a couple pictures this weekend, and
post them on this thread - chances are others might want to see. It has not
been painted yet, and is still in gel coat (grey on a white car). I had thought
about painting it black, and the grille and headlight bezels black. The car is
going to get an LT1/4L60E out of a 94 Firebird we picked up for 2300 bucks.
It has 67k on it. We also plan to use the seats and anything else we can get
to fit the Camaro. The goal is to kick the PHR's g/28 that the started as a
budget car which can pass Cal emissions. We are going a different route. The
LT1 should pass emissions easy after certification at a smog Ref. They just
have a TH350, we will have an OD (& better first gear). I put an Impala SS
front sway bar on it, Bilstein shocks, and Hotchkis springs. Its still got the
lame 305 (120hp on-a-good-day) engine in it, but goes around corners like it
on rails. The brakes I plan on using Impala SS knuckles and its 12 inch rotors.
But we shall see, I just designed brackets for my 63 Avanti to mount 03 Cobra
13" PBR calipers and drilled and slotted rotors, might do something like that for
the 78 Camaro knuckles too.

I am sorry! It rained this weekend, and I didnt get out to take the pics. I got
a couple pictures this AM, but I dont think they will work. It will be dark by
the time I get home (all week this time a year!), so I will jump start the car, &
drive it over to a well lit parking lot for a couple shots.

Sorry for the delay!

The pictures I took this morning were of the cars covered with ice! I wasnt
focusing on anything in particular. So you would be able to see it, but not as
well as if were for the spoiler. It is Studebaker powered, 63-64 had the 289
Studebaker engines, and the "Avanti II" 65-85 had GM small blocks. I like the
Studebaker engine since it makes good HP/Torque and makes people scratch
their head when you open the hood up.

Better late then never ... here are a few pictures .. took forever to get the
damn thing jump started. I think I need a new battery.

I found some pictures showing the hole locations, dont remember where I got
them from but I hosted them for you. I used this as a guide, varied a little.

looks good. when are you gonna get it painted? id rather wait to see how it looks after the whole cars painted before i make any mods. but im definately gonna use that spoiler like you used if i decide to use something else other than the stock one. but yeah like you said it flows with the body lines alot better.

i wonder if we could get someone to photoshop this car as if it were painted red????? or whatever color you wanna paint it.... thatd be pretty cool.

Paint is the LAST thing on the list, its going to be years before that happens.
I might go as far as buy some OEM paint to fix the bumper and paint the rear
spoiler, but the whole car is going to stay this way until the driveline is done.
Besides .. it has a certain "sleeper" feel right now.

I am not a photoshop expert .. thats up to you.
