Question 30 Amp Relay?????

What the heck is this? Ive read about it when searching about upgrading my headlights. I want to put in higher wattage bulbs, but dont want to burn anything up. This keeps poping up. I am by NO means an electrician, so i got no idea what it is. Also, on the topic of headlights, what are some good upgrade bulbs? Ive heard Hella 80W and 100W's are good. But where can I get them at?

A 30-Amp relay looks like this. It is just a switch that keeps the current flowing steady to whatever device it is hooked up to, and it also serves somewhat as a "booster" for your stock wiring. They can be bought at any auto store, and even Wal-Mart.

I am sure there are a few posts that tell how to hook them up. I have posted it several times in many of the headlight discussions.

You may also want to read this page. It'll explain a little more to you.

Hella bulbs are IMO the best. I don't care much for the Optilux by Hella, because they are made in Singapore, and I haven't had any luck with them. You can get Hella bulbs online several places, one such is here. Regular Hella bulbs are just regular color temp., so only get them if you are wanting brighter, not whiter light. Another good brand is Luks. You can get them here.

Re: 30 Amp Relay?????

Nokya. Just make sure you pay attention to the ACTUAL wattage and not rated wattage. For example - look at this picture. Notice on the bottom right corner of the box it has 55w => 80w. That means it is an ACTUAL 55w bulb that looks like 80w. It's no better than stock for output - just the color.

Most Nokya's that are on eBay are 80w actual - 100w simulated - but there may be some actual 100w on there - you'd just have to do the research. They are also available several other places online.

Would you recomend also buying the Heavy Duty harness that they offer? According to you, if I ran a 30 Amp relay(which I think I understand now! Thanks!) I should have plenty of power to run actual 100W and 120W bulbs. Right?

Also, are these the proper lights to use for the high and low beams?

The harnesses they offer are crap. They are just a 2 foot lead out of the back of the bulb that ties into your existing harness - pointless! Just stick with the setup we have discussed.

How would you compare the Hella 100W to the Luks 100W? I have the Luks 100W in my FF75s and am wondering if the Hellas would be worth the upgrade.

I'll put it this way. I had the Luks before the Hella's...

If it were me, until my Luks' blew out, I wouldn't make a special purchase to "upgrade" to the Hella's...I'd just wait until I needed new bulbs. You cannot beat the Luks for the price IMO. I am still trying to decide what my next step will be.
