What to look for when tearing down motor?

Right now Im in the process of tearing down my stock motor for machining. Im a beginner when it comes to this sort of thing and I was told by a knowlegeable board member I need to look out and watch for certain things. Is there anything I can pick up visually or should look for before it goes to the machine shop?

Thanks
