Wondering about the balancing of them. The crank would have to have some Mallory in it to balance it internally. If it was ran wiht a A4 and a weighted flexplate, would there be anythign necessary to do to the flywheel? Stock balancer be fine or have to go wiht something like an ATI or Fluidamper?

The rear main seal is different on the 400 crank.... 2 piece. If you want a cheap cast crank with a 1 piece seal they are rather plentiful.
What is the situation here?

Are you talking about an actual 400 SBC chevy crank or an aftermarket 3.75" stroke crank? The factory 400 crank has much larger main journals than the other small blocks. Best bet is an aftermarket 3.75" stroke with 350 mains and a one piece rear seal design.
However there are MANY 3.75" 350 main 2 piece rear seal cranks out there to be had at a very good price. All you'd need is a rear main seal adaptor. Moroso, GM, & many others offer these adaptors.

$250 gets you a Scat one that bolts right in. You also need a piston and rod combo to work with it.

Sure you can buy a seal adaptor but then the machine shop has to machine the block for it and turn the main journals of the crank ($$).
As Bret mentioned, the $250 Scat crank might even save you a bit of money plus you'll have a rear seal thats less likely to leak.
