Post Valve seat test....

Not sure if this is technical enough. If not, mods feel free to move it.

I have been floating the valves, and did not know it. I didnt know how many miles were on the springs, and have been buzzing the motor up to 6500. I went to adjust my valves, and found one valvestem tip mushroomed, and the roller on the rocker (Comp Pro Mag 1.6's) had chipped some of the chrome off. Well, on that rocker, and a few others, I found a spot on the base of the fulcrum of the rocker, where the spring retainer, had come in contact with the rocker. Im afraid that I have beat the seats into the heads. Im wondering if there is a way to perform some test. I was thinking a vacuum check would work. If the needle moves irradicly, that would prove a valve is not seating correctly right? Im also thinking about a compression check. Im assuming that would also work assuming that SOME of the seats are ok(its pretty bad I think). I just want to know for sure before I pull the heads off to get worked over. What do you guys think??

Thanks.
Kyle

Either should work. FYI, Brodix does a vacuum test after a valve job to ensure good sealing.

I perfer to use the leak down test to determine if the valves are leaking. If you have more that 15% leak down then a rebuild is necessary. Also if a valve leaks you can tell by listening to the carb/TB or the exhaust for a hissing sound to tell which valve is leaking. We tested our race motor before this season and had between 0.5% to 1% leakage. It was hard to read the first two marks on the guage so that is about as acurate as we could measure. We then intentionally opened a valve to see what 5-10% sounded like. You could deffinately hear the air hissing.

As far as the retainers hitting the rockers, do you have the stock springs or the 1.55" springs. I ask because eventhough the rockers are cleared for the larger springs some high lift cams will still cause the retainer to hit the rocker and they have to be clearanced. Also you might want to check to see if you have the right push rod length. Running one that is too short can also cause the rocker to hit the retainer. Just some ideas.
