I do my checking like AdioSS posted about. Beats the heck out of clay, ripping the head on and off, etc.

If you don't have access to a dial indicator you can just get a .100" flat shim and attempt to shove it between the rocker arm tip and valve tip at several points from 10* BTDC and 10* ATDC during the overlap in a manner that is otherwise exactly the same as AdioSS describes. If you can shove it in there, you've got more than .100" clearance. If you can't, you don't.
