Post Trans Break

Advanced tech discussion for all years. Stroker motors, Driveline rebuilds, etc... HIGH-END DISCUSSION ONLY - NOT FOR GENERAL TECH OF ANY KIND

I believe this belongs here,

Ok, I have a 95z28 with a 700r4 stg 2 shift kit and a vigilante 3400 stall converter, I will so be upgrading to a 12 bolt rear end, and new engine and driveshaft.

My question is does anyone know if a 700r4 is capable of using a trans break?
also can someone tell me what is gonna be needed for a trans break? such as rev limiting systems?

And if anyone knows the average price for a full trans break setup.
thanks alot

I talked to a guy that hangs at the NSCA board that currently has a 700R4 with a break..
The whole cost without converter as i was told was 1900 smacks for the trans..You wont need a rev limiter to use the brake as the unit will hold the car locked at the line with fluid pressure effectively holding 1st gear and reverse at the same time..This way you can load the converter without chance of crossing the line..

TCI says they will soon reelease a valvebody with a brake but ive never had any good luck with the product from TCI..

what I find funny is they are just now coming out with some thing I built back in 93

Everyone wanted to know how we did it but said there was no market and they could not see a market in the future .

Funny stuff

Ok Eliis, fess up. Apparently it IS possible, and MY question is,can it be made for a 4l60e???
I was/am debating a swap if a Tbrake becomes available for a 700r4.

And so far,my 4l60e is doing just fiiiine with many low 11's down the track...Thanx Frank

How are you getting the bands to live?

they snap all the time from just a normal hipo build. How are you getting them to take the hit of a trans-brake ellis?

^^ that is the main reason why the 700 brake is not too popular

Plan on fairly frequent rebuilds due to the high loads placed on the trans. Art Carr, as far as I know, is the only company that manufactures a trans brake for the 700 right now. My buddy was going to put one in his Z28 until he found out his reliability would go way down. He just stuck with his manual valve bodied 700 with 4000 TCS 9/11 stall instead.

The transbrake will lock the transmission in 2 gears allowing the engine rpm to increase until the torque converter's stall speed is reached. When the transbrake is released all that energy is let go down the driveline.

Before you invest in a transbrake you should also beef up the driveline. I use a 3" x .083 driveshaft with 1350 series u-joints and a 9" diff to take the shock of a transbrake.

You're also going to need a very good race converter that will take the abuse of a transbrake.

You don't need a rev limiter when using a transbrake but a 2 step will help if you don't want to launch at the torque converter's full stall. My converter will stall at 5000 rpm on the transbrake but I can easily set the 2 step to launch at 3500. I'm also using a TH400 transmission.

Ellis:
What kind of car are you talking about here with a trans-brake + 4L60/700R4?

A car that you're trying to make run 11s @ < 110 mph or a car that runs 10s @ 130 mph?

I wouldn't be brave enough to try a trans-brake on a 4L60E with a 600+ rwhp/lbs-ft car.

I heard that art carr is building a trans brake for the 4l60 hasnt released but is in the testing stages. I personally would look at another trany but if you are a die hard 4l60 user might be a thing for you
