Question T56 Overhaul kits

Alright, 1st post on Camaroz28.com here goes: I'm going to be rebuilding the trans in my car and I'm trying to find the best price for a rebuild kit. I need new bearings, and a 3rd gear synchro, i don't know if i have to buy a complete synchro set or if i can buy just one. Also, if anyone could tell me who makes the best manual for a teardown and rebuild? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit- I've rebuilt a couple 4 and 5 speed manual transmissions before, but never a 6-speed. Will I need any "special" tools?

I know Jordan Musser (SP?) has rebuilt his. Might want to shoot him an email... post your results on the thread for people who do a search. Also, there are Viper Upgrade kits available out there (cast iron shift forks, better synchros, etc). I'm looking into this too in a few months...

you will need a gear puller with a very long (i think about 8-9 inches, its been awhile) reach. But thats about the only "special" tool I think you'll need.

Where do you live, there is a guy in OC So Cal and one in the Valley who do really good jobs and upgrade with the Viper components. Also, Jordan Musser (on CZ28) will also rebuild your tranny if you don't want to get into it.

You'll need a long puller to yank off the 5-6 driven gear. I made one from a harmonic balancer puller, some threaded rod, and a couple "hooks" that I milled from some scrap steel blocks. If you're lucky, you might find something that'll work in a local discount tool retailer; I wasn't and so I fabricated my own. Once it's apart, you'll need a bearing splitter and a decent-sized hydraulic press to disassemble and reassemble the clusters that are pressed on the mainshaft.

I've had great luck with D&D for parts - good prices, good service, quick shipping (yea, I'm only 150 miles away so it shouldn't take long, but they always get stuff out when promised).

I don't know what you mean by needing a new 3rd-gear synchro, but you'll probably find that either the blocking ring is wiped out or you've damaged your 3/4 synchro ring. If you buy D&D's rebuild kit you'll get a set of new blocking rings, but synchro rings are significantly more expensive and so I don't think you'll want to replace any that aren't damaged. If the teeth on the synchro ring show signs of wear (i.e. they're rounded or wiped instead of sharp), then it'll need to be replaced.

D&D can sell you a rebuild manual for $20; it's identical to the PDF that's floating around and that was at one time posted on Spicer's website.

these arent really all that difficult to do. if you use the .PDF file, it shows you pretty much anything you might want to know about re-building one. i've got a few pics up on yahoo of mine, but it's basically replacing, and inspecting the wear items, and addressing your trouble spots you feel when shifing. you will need a 15mm socket, the 5-6 gear puller as well as a good set of snap ring pliers and a torx 40 socket. other than that, some ultra-black sealant and you're all set, unless you have to press off the timkien bearings way down in the 1-2 part of the mainshaft. (what eric was talking about. but you shouldnt have to if it's in fairly decent shape IMO.)

as far as parts go, D&D is a good source, but if you need them a little quicker than from there, a local GM dealership can overnight parts, as well as supply you with a printout of the t-56's guts. e-mail me later if you need either parts or a printout of the tranny, i've got acess to both.

here' s a few pics that might be helpful also.

the one that used to be posted on this site was a bad link. Andrew (the cable guy) had posted it over on Ls1 tech.
