springless valvetrain

just wondering if its ever been implemented on any sort of race engine before and how well it worked

by springless valvetrain i mean a cam that opens the valve and another cam that closes it and keeps it shut

getting serious valves/pushrods/rockers that can sustain high rpm isnt difficult right, its the springs needed for high rpm need to push with a lot of force and are heavy and not durable etc...

also would love to know about the 'springs' used in formula 1 if anybody knows about them, i understand they use air/gas/oil pnumatic springs?

Ducati motorcycle engines work as you described, with an opening and a closing cam on each valve. The call it desmdromic valve actuation .

Yeah, that's desmodromic valve actuation.... not exactly a low maintainance system though.

This pic may help you see what's going on with the F1-type actuation:

I'd really like to see Coates Spherical Rotary Valves come to aftermarket production on a V8.

Oh yeah baby ... everybody take a look

Not only does it get rid of the springs, it gets rid of all the reciprocating masses!

Boy I would love to get rid of the valvetrain... image the power potential. Imagine you can program your valve train like a fuel injector … man that will be the day.

Sweet. Meaning you should theoretically be able to hold the motor @ peak TQ and peak HP @ ever RPM. now that'll be something else. I know that the GM Gen IV sb that's been rumored to debute in the C6 is not even supposed to have camshafts.

the c6 will first get something along the lines of an ls6 with a tad more displacement, and two cams.... still in block pushrod, this will allow for cam phasing

then later the c6 will get a camless engine

...or so i hear...
