Second Gen Oil Pan Replacement?
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace a stock oil pan on gen 1 small block in a 79 camaro without pulling the motor? How much clearence is needed between the cross member and pan?

Most of the problem with this type of replacement (regadless of what model car) is when you have to drop the back of the pan down far enough to clear the flywheel/flexplate. Often the pan will just wedge against the x-member before the back of the pan will drop far enough.
Removing the motor mount bolts, the distributor and jacking the whole thing up until the tranny hits the tunnel is a bare minimum to have any shot at doing this. I was never successful doing this with a 3rd gen, but a 2nd gen might have a shot.

It is possible, I did it in my '77 about 10 yrs ago. You will have to undo the motor mounts and lift it as high as it will go. You may also have to turn the throws of the crank as it comes out. I did this with a stock pan and it was tight, I don't know what it would be like with a larger aftermarket pan. If you take your time and have patience you will have a good shot at it fixing your leak. Spring for the one piece seal and you'll have an even better chance. As far as I know there is no easy way to do it just have to get in there. I hope this helps.
