Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
Re: Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
wit the lifters making so much noise is there a chance that they would upset the knock sensor, i know if you run a solid flat tappet on a l98 the knock sensor dosent like it too much... am i way out of line here??

Re: Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
I contacted Rhoads about the LT1 lifters, here's a quote from the email back to me:
Are these the ones in this discussion?
We do have Rhoads OE Rollers for the LT1, they can be ordered direct from Rhoads. If you are interested, please call me at 520-229-9375 for instructions on how to order.
Re: Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
A friend of mine is going to try them in his '92 TBI truck. He built a Vortec-headed 355 with a Comp XE262H (flat-tappet) cam, which is a bit too much cam for the PROM-based ECM's of that era. His theory is that it will calm the cam down at lower RPMs (his truck is kinda dead till about 2,400 when he launches it at the track, then it takes off like a bat outta hell). I'll post again when I hear some results.
Re: Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
my question is are these as stiff or stiffer then a regular OEM lifter? I know with my cam I rev to 7kRPM to make MAX power and I'm using 875-16 Comp Extreme energy lifters because I'm runnnig 400LB over the nose or so (397 to be exact) and I need lifters that are stiff and won't bleed off at high RPM, will these lifters just not compare to the my stiff 875-16 lifters or are they going to be just as stiff by about 4k RPM where my cam wakes up?
Also, I doubt they would make much noise in my setup because I use a hydra rev kit which would keep the lifter body on the cam at all times.
Matt.

I screwed up and found out that my cam is a bit much for what ive got going on so i put in the lifters to try and help it out and what a difference they made. I have a much noticed improvement in bottom end power. The reason i used the lifters is cuz im running a TH 350 tranny with 3.23 gears and a 2500 stall and the cam was a bit much for that combination. I was very impressed with what they did for me and i would recommend them to other people. And YES, theyre definetely noisy.
I have an 86 TA with the .510 lift cam also. my compression is just a bit lower also.
I already fried my first 350 turbo with a 3000 stall because of town driving. My car has 3.73's but it still cruses below the stall speed.
With these lifters would I be able to get away with maybe a 2400 converter?
myfast81camaro if you would e-mail me, i would like to ask some other questions about these ggreen3154@charter.net
thanks

Re: Rhodes-style hydralic lifters
I'm old enough to remember when Rhoads Lifters were the hot ticket.
(Hell, I'm old enough to remember when "Jive Turkey" was a cutting edge insult, but that's another story.)
Point is, they were popular before Hydraulic Rollers were commonly available and relatively affordable. Today, I don't think they offer any meaningful advantage over HR's.
BTW, the noise from the Rhoads lifters was considered desireable at one time, because it made it sound like you were running a solid cam, giving you instant street cred. (Those were different times.)
If you don't like the noise, one of the other companies... Crane I think; makes variable duration lifters that are engineered to be quieter.
One last thing...
If you really want to try them, you should buy one of the matched camshafts from Rhoads as well, because they are designed to take maximum advantage of the variable duration lifters.

This is the reason I'm considering a 396 for my engine build instead of the 383 that's currently the front runner... more cubes means more power, at better emmissions. I know it sounds dumb... by I'll be damned if the state is gonna limit my cam selection to sacrifice hp. With the 396 I can eat a bigger cam and pull more vacume... and hopefully less emmissions.
I put together a 11:1 383 car here in ohio where we also have the roller check. Basically ported lt4 heads and intake, 847 cam, and FLP longtubes with the cats on. No AIR, no EGR etc. Went in there on the street tune and it passed fine. Might want to check these results with what you are allowed.
First try with the off road pipes on the car...
288.8 HC, limit 99........fail
1.47% CO, limit .55%...fail
co2 12.87, limit na
With the cats on it.
HC 23.2, limit 99.......pass
0% CO....limit .55%....pass

Money is the main reason I was considering these lifters. I know they would only be a sort of "band aid" but It would let me get some use out of the car during the summer, and next winter I might have the extra cash for a new head, cam package.
