rebuilding the short block... details inside
My question is, since my cylinders were in excellent shape, would there be any need to torque-plate hone the cylinders, and what benefit would there be over flex honing. Torque plate honing costs $145 versus the $40 for flex-honing.
Heres the verdict.
crank:
.020 on the rod jounals
.010 on the main journals
cylinders:
6 were .0020
2 were .0025
rods:
#8 was out of round slightly
said they were going to resize all 8 rods. I forget the numbers though, but it wasn't bad.
pistons:
great shape, going to reuse
To turn the crank it is $84, flex hone the cylinders (just to get a crosshatch back in) $64, assembly is $156, resizing all 8 rods were $40, line-honing and the rest was $95.
Assembly included file-fit and gap rings, pretty much the whole 9-yards besides balancing, which is an extra $175.

From what i understand, torque plate honing they attach a plate which acts as a cyl head and "loads" the block like it had heads seated on it. That way when the hone goes through, it is perfectly straight with how the block will be once its all bolt back together. Without the plate, you may get a bore that is straight with the heads off, but once you bolt it together, will it still be straight?
