oil pump question

i apologize to ken and fred in advance if this isn't advanced enough for the forum, but i haven't had much luck in LT1 Tech lately.

i ordered a melling high volume oil pump, shaft and pickup with my new stroker kit. i talked to a friend today who is on the LT1 Edit mailing list; he told me about several people with high hp cars having problems with high volume pumps sucking the pan dry at upper rpm's. apparently the oil doesn't get back into the pan quick enough, causing the pickup to become uncovered.

he told me that the solution the people on the list have found is to use a stock melling or gm pump and replace the stock spring with a "white" spring that you can buy over the counter from the chebby dealer. this is supposed to move more oil through the engine, but not so much that the pickup gets uncovered above ~5500~ rpm.

does anybody here have any experience with this? i realize i could just get a canton pan, but fundage restrictions limit me to using the stock pan. TIA for advice, suggestions, comments...

hehe...a buddy of mine emailed me a thread in LT1 Tech from earlier this year that pretty much answers my question. the consensus seems to be to use a canton pan with the hv pump, or a stock pump and the white spring with the stock pan.

guess i shoulda done a search...

I fail to see the relevance to the sbc, unless you figure they use the same pump.

Is there a part number or description besides "white spring"

I think arnie lives for part numbers.

That is one of the #s from the days when the 'hard drive' was still capable of retrieving numbers after having stored them.

MGA, not exactly SBC.

thanks for the replies fellas. i had them substitute a stock pump with the white spring for the melling hv pump.
