I will soon be building a set of headers for an SB2.2 in a road race car and I need some help with primary sizes, lengths, and collector specs. If anybody can help that's great, otherwise if you could point me in the right direction to find somebody that would be helpful.
RPM range: 6,000-8,500
Bore 4.1735"
Stroke 3.268"
Compression 13.4:1
I have head flow numbers if needed.
Camshaft:
Duration (intake/exaust) 256/264
Lift (intake/exaust) .729(1.7)/.720(1.8)
Lobe Center Separation 108
Intake Centerline 104
Thanks, Matt

Re: Need help designing headers
Burns developed a parametric program for header design called "X-design". Go fill the form out ~~> http://www.burnsstainless.com/Xdesig...spec__form.htm
If you buy your merge collectors from them, they'll help you out in the design process. If not, then you're on your own.
I'd caution against using the collectors without taking advantage of the service. When I had my headers built (using Burns collectors) I used the service. I've seen guys just bolt the collectors on and lose hp & tq... then conclude that, "Them darn things don't work". On the other hand, one engine builder here local to me uses Burns' "dyno swap system" (has a name but I can't remember it) and they've seen some really eye opening results from changes that would seem very minor. You'll probably want a little less exhaust duration (split cam) then you think is normal. But yeah, fill out the form, talk to Vince or Jack and they'll help you get where you want to go. Good group of guys.

You also might want to go pick up PipeMax5.0 from MaxRaceSoftware.com his program is great a building the correct headers for you car if you don't want to go with the whole Burns deal which BTW are some really nice headers.

Your 357.7 cube engine sounds quite similar to a road course Busch engine. Some of these guys are using 4>2>1 (Tri-Y) headers. I'm not sure on the road course cars, but you might check with a couple of companies that build Cup and Busch headers. The exhibited at PRI show. I'll check for their cards. They might be willing to build you headers or at least give you some ideas of what they've built for "similsr" engines.
Sometimes a "peek" is worth a lot of testing and calculation.
Your budget will be the deciding factor. Unless you need the $6K+ Inconel versions, you could spend half of that easily. I guess it depends on "how fast do you want to go."
Both of the above suggestions from Mindgame and Ace are good ones.

Re: Need help designing headers
I definately will not be hiring anybody to build these headers. I seriously doubt that the extra couple hp of the merge collectors justify their expense in this case. In fact it's likely I'll build them of mild steel.
I might buy the maxrace piece, and I'll definately look into it.
Yes oldstroker these would be similar to those used by cup cars on road courses, since that's basically what we have. The heads are from an 03 cup car.
I have a guy at a cup engine shop I could call. How long till you wear out your welcome with these guys
