Need Help With 95 A4 Tranny.
First off let me say that I have tried to get some answers in the LT1 tech section, but know body seems to know about the internals of the transmissions. I've talked to both Rob (shoebox) and Fred (Injuneer) and neither of them were for sure.
Anyway,
I bought a rebuilt tranny out of a 97 CamaroSS yesterday, thinking that it would be a perfect swap into my 95 Z28. When I got under the car to start the removal of the old tranny I noticed that the Vehicle Speed Sensor's were different between the two. So I thought I'd better double check to see if 97 tranny would be compatable with my computer and wire harnesses. I've been told that I could swap tail shafts to keep the VSS connections the same. But have since been told that the pin count on the trannys for the main wiring harness were different. So I've checked the pin counts and they are both 13 pin connectors and are in the same locations. Then I called a tranny shop to double check and they said that the 97's have 4 solenoids and the 95's only have 3 and that the wiring harness's are different also. So I told them that I had counted the pins and the count was the same on both and that are located in the same positions. They told me that I could double check if I dropped the pan and counted the solenoids. But I don't want to lose any more clutch material by dropping the pan until I have a replacement tranny. So to finally get to the question does anybody know how many solenoids are in the 95 trannys. Or is there someone I can contact to find out, that will know for sure? Thanks. Any info. is GREATLY appreciated.

The '95 4L60E electronics were different from both the '94s and the '96-'97 trans. IIRC, the '95 models included a 3-2 kickdown solenoid whereas the '94s didn't have this. The '96 up had the PWM TCC solenoids...I think. This being said, a friend of mine installed a '95 trans in his '97 and said that there wasn't any driveability problems or codes.
I you do this swap, be sure to let us know how it turns out.

I am going to try the swap. I have been getting a TON of help from a couple of guys that are on the board. (Pro Built Automatics and 12SCNDZ). I know exactly what you are talking about with the solenoids. I have swaped the PWM 3-2 Control Solenoid from my 95 and put it in place of the 97's PWM 3-2 On/Off Solenoid. But I have run into another problem, because the pins inside of the connector on the solenoids are in different postions. So I either have to cut the connector off of the 95 harness and swap/splice it into the 97 harness. Or swap the complete harness out of my 95 into the 97. But now I wonder if I could just do what your friend did and leave the solenoids as is?
BTW, 95-97 had the PWM TCC Solenoids.

Rich,
Things are a little clearer this morning. You're right...the '95up trans all have the PWM TCC. Not only was the '95 3-2 control solenoid PWM, but the control valve and spring were also different. So I'm not sure if that will present a problem or not.
If you have a compatability problem...You could always change both your valvebody and wiring harness from your '95 onto the '97 model and essentially have a '95 model transmission then. Kevin

STOP!
No need to change every thing. The 97 Should plug right in and work. you can even use the VSS just route the wire to the other side.
95 is different from all other years but I have used 95s in 96- cars and 96- trans's in 95 cars.
I have Never had to but the most that you would have to change is the internal harness and the 3-2 soleniod
Now running a 94 trans on a 97 PCM is tricky but I know how to do it with OUT PWM lock-up
