Loose crank pulley!!! What damage could have been done???
I just bought a 2000 S10, Extreme with the 4.3 and 21,600 miles 2 months ago for my daily driver (This way the Z28 comes out to play on the weekends
). Well earlier this week I heard a squeek coming from under the hood. I figured it was just the serpentine belt slipping a little and was going to replace it myself so I wouldn't have to mess around with getting it to the dealership for scheduling and what not. The truck is still under factory warranty until May 2003. Well, I pop the hood open, look at the serpentine belt (which looks fine) and noticed the crank pulley wobbling back and forth (front to back). Now, to my knowledge that baby shouldn't move, right? The truck has always had a vibration when the engine got to 4,000+rpms since I bought it with 19,386 miles. I figured it is not a sports car like my Z28 and that it was the driveshaft that was vibrating. Now I think that the vibration is caused by that crank pulley being loose and wobbling back and forth causing the crank to be unbalanced! I am going to call the dealership first thing next week as I am leaving for business for the next 5 days. Here is the question, do you think the motor is toast? Does having the crank pulley loose like that cause damage to the crank? Has the longevity of the motor been reduced greatly? Do you think I should push hard to have the dealership install a new motor? Sorry for the long post, but I am concerned about the longevity of the motor! Thanks for any insight!

I can't tell you for sure, but I ran into the same problem with my mom's car. After it was fixed, the car just wasn't as fast as it used to be...it felt sluggish and just didn't have the power it used to.
