Lifter Boxes

Anybody used a set of Gen III lifter boxes in a Gen I/II motor? I have read that you can do it, just looking for some personal experiance.

I have a few sets laying around and if I end up having to swap cams to pass smog, it would be nice to not have to pull the intake.

Re: Lifter Boxes

I don't think it would be possible, thinking about the way the lifter retainers in a Gen I/II block work and how the lifter boxes would have to set in there. I heard a couple years ago that GMPP had released a similar deal for the Gen I/II motors but I searched under the part number that I was given and couldn't find them.

On the other hand I don't think it would be real advantageous even if it were possible. By the time you've got the rockers and pushrods off it's not much to pull the intake, even on the most stubborn LT1, to get the lifters out. The LS is a different story since the lifters are in the block. So GM designed the boxes so you don't have to pull the heads to swap a cam. Big thumbsup to GM on that one!

i think this is what you guys are talking about, no need to use gen 3 boxes.

Yep - that's it, I knew I had seen a similar kit, or an adapter setup somewhere. The less I have to wrench on the thing bent over the better.

Re: Lifter Boxes

I'm still weary though, because even on the LS1's the boxes wear a bit and don't always hold the lifters. I know a few people that have dropped lifters that fell while the cam was out. I milled a couple pieces of aluminum stock into rods that would slide into the block. Once the lifters were out of the way, the rods slid in and stopped them from dropping while the cam was out. Can't do that on a Gen !/II.
