Let's not dismiss the mopar just yet though. The 4.1" bore is still enticing. I don't agree with the "time bomb" crank theory as many of these things were reliably turning Richard Petty's race cars in the mid seventies. And if you break this motor... what have you really got in it??

I agree, the mopar has the better cylinder head. That with the big bore gives us piston area and here we're talking nitrous.... PSI, so the more square inch we got, the better IMO. Of course alot of guys are talking this up just like we are. I guess it just comes down to putting the $change$ where the mouth is right.

The claim thing is a stickler see... the only guys who can make a claim are those qualifying in the top 5 (I believe) and the chances are that no claims will be made (there have been none so far as I can tell). One of the quickest guys, holding the points title right now, is Jeremy Taylor. He's running a Nova and ironically enough, he's running a Pro Systems nitrous carb.
For the nitrous guys, like I said before, there's alot to be had in the carb. There are also some fudging area with the nitrous delivery. Compression is only a domed piston away. I know alot of guys don't like domes but for a race car.... you have a lot less worry.

Very interesting that there haven't been claims. (Top 8 can claim)If that keeps up, it makes the claimer rule a joke, which might not be all bad. Those that win will be spending the $ to get there anyway. It's difficult to limit spending in any form of racing, as you know. Claiming drives out the underfunded.

The guy who dominates is definitely gonna be the one tip-toeing on the edge of legality.

LOL That defines Bret's philosophy on any contest...even rugby.

Flat tops are the rule. Easy to check, of course.

Fudging nitrous delivery? That would be like fudging an intake restrictor rule when the restrictor is not issued at the race.

Flat tops it is. Also noticed that cylinder head milling is "permitted" so there we have it.

I have a feeling that this may get taken the wrong way but what the heck... Have you (John) ever competed in NHRA or IHRA competition?

Having been in that areana I can honestly say that there are grey areas everywhere and everyone will be playing the boundaries... yes, even with the nitrous (you have to dig in the rule book a little further).

Also, we're dwelling alot on the engine but a race car is about combination. That Nova I mentioned in the last response turned a best of 9.16 with a 1.34 second 60'. Wasn't big buck by any standard and it was very competitive with the really fast guys at that time...... Nick Scavo, Bobby Johnson, Todd Moyer, etc.. Only guy with less in their setup was Todd and he was one guy that just had his stuff together. We both agreed that my motor was putting down a bit more hp, but I wasn't touching Todd's 8.99's. He had the better combination and try as I may, I never got there.

btw, how bout that 452 rwhp?

Nope, not an organized drag racer, 'Game.

Of course there's lots of gray. I'd guess nitrous usage is tough to police. Probably don't need to discuss here how to get the most gas thru a hole.

Complete agreement on the "combination".

I read an interview with Jack Roush. When asked, he said he spent 85 large buying competitor's engine only to find out he had 4-5% more power, but wasn't winning. Combination.

Did they change the nitrous rule in Cheap Street in the last couple of months?

Orignal orifice size was .082 now it's down to .063.

Combinations do everything, obviously the motor is only part of it just like the cam is only part of the motor.

Edge of legality.... Ha the tech guys running the EM hate me cause I push the legal rules more and more and then they have to change the rules to keep me and others at bay. There are specific lifter and intake rules put in, both of them saved me some time, but I didn't like them. I'm not going to get into the "legal" things I did in rugby matches. Most people wouldn't want to hear about the things I did there, most of them were not very pleasant feeling to the other competitors. Presenting a stiff arm at the right time in the right part of someones neck is a art. Just goes to show that being too competitve has it's downfalls sometimes.

Game BTW the old boy was a Fighter Pilot, not a racer. Same thing to a certain extent.

no offense, but I'm pretty sure that WJ or Pierce would not appreciate anyone using their name, and a competition illegal cylinder head in the same sentence. Just letting you know.
