Homedone P&P... look
Homedone P&P... look
Hey guys I'm interested in doing a home done P&P on my heads and upper intake so that when i get my new cam the performance will be maximized. I know I need to buy some carbide bits for the dremel and i will do a lot of research before i do it. I know that it wont be as good as the pro's, but what I'm asking is whats the worst that could happen... I mean as long as i dont go too crazy theres not really much i could mess up is there? And how hard is... it just seems like a bunch of grinding, nothing too precise. Any input is appreciated.
Head porting involves much more than you might think. If it was just buying a dremel tool and going at it, nobody would pay someone else $1000-$2000 to get their heads ported. Best advice I can give you is to go ahead and buy a book dealing with the subject, and take a shot at it if you really want to. You might get lucky and port yourself a good set of heads, or you can hog out the heads and mess up port velocity. The worst that can happen is you can crack the heads and render them useless. Good luck.
Man best to buythe tools you need..Get a few cracked heads from a junkyard or rebuilder and practace on them..After reading info on the subject you will get the idea..Try to get the same heads that you really want to port..Vortecs work for LT1s and L98 heads are pretty much the same for the LB9 heads from 305 TBI engines..
www.ruffstuff.com has the bits and stuff you needs..Makita sells an electric grinder or if you want to get some air then theres a bigger selection..
After you get you tools and practace heads do one thing to one port and then one more with the next till the heads is full..The flow testing will cost you but you can keep track of what is going on and the flow tester can help you as well..expect to pay around 70 dollars an hr for testing..
Thats pretty much how i got started..I got lucky and had a friend who had a head shop with a bench..If you are looking at aftermarket heads and you must do themyourself then tryto find a bad one on the net cheap..I got lucky and sourced up some brodix -12s for 600 once..i played with the bad one and then bought a replacement to rework the pair.
Hope this helps
