GM declares "Dominion," or kinda "Dominion?"
GM declares "Dominion," or kinda "Dominion?"
I just picked up the new issue of Motor Trend, and found this to be interesting news:
GM's Three Valve OHVs
Featuring new tech for the next Z06
Beware, Dodge Viper and Ford GT. The 2006 C6 Corvette Z06's 6.3 liter Gen IV small block push rod V-8 features 24 valves and makes 500 hp @ 7000 rpm. The Gen IV is the featured engine using a new GM powertrain technology; a three valve/cylinder pushrod valvetrain, which the automaker will also use in some High Value V-6s. The C6's small block can grow to 7.0 liters and rev to 8000 rpm.
The new design pairs intake valves side by side; they're operated by a forked rocker arm. The exhaust valve sits on the opposite side of the combustion chamber, with a centrally located spark plug located in between. The Gen IV flows more air through its dual intake ports, and the intake and exhaust ports are more widely seperated for less heat transfer from the exhaust to the intake charge. The extra horses work well with the Displacement on Demand system that appears with the Gen IV V-8 and High Value V-6s-more power means more opportunity for the engine to idle half its cylinders. Look for the deeper breathing heads and associated upgrades in the 2005 model year.
Hmmmm, so maybe this madman isn't such a madman to believe in his dream...

If you think aftermarket LS1 rockers are expensive, wait until you see what forked roller rockers go for! And I'm guessing they won't be light either, but since they are talking about 8000 rpm redlines it may not be an issue.
Still, I remain puzzled by GM's insistence on pushrods and rockers as opposed to an OHC 4v design. The LS6 gives impressive power numbers, but a modern rendition of the LT5 would really be something! 100+hp/liter, anyone?

The LT5 probably cost many times what the LS6 costs to build. FWIW, a 600 hp 6.0L NA (better yet 550+ lb-ft 6.0L) would be a challenge for a DOHC engine in a sub $60K vehicle. Yep, there are folks doing about 600 hp, but pricing starts above 1/4 million, and the market is somewhat(?) limited. Most of the 100 hp/L engines are running above 8000 and have no better max torque/L than an LS6 with it's 71.4 hp/L.
My $.02
Well, the Mercedes V12 BiTurbo is 500hp/600ftlb and its "only" $120K :-)
At 12.2, it's also only 3/10ths slower than my blown LT1 Vette. That's why I'm building the 396 LT4... can't have the family car faster than the track car!

For anyone who remembers.....i started a thread asking about what happened to these very specific heads. I remember getting/reading a hot rod YEARS AGO and they were talking about these heads.
Except they were normal SBC heads not the new Gen III design

lol
Bret
I read an article of this caliber a few weeks ago and found it to be very interesting. The design is very similar to the Dom's so I called Russ since I knew he originally was trying to market his idea to GM.
Bob, I think I'm going to put that pic on my website

And to stay on tech, Pops Racer def. knows his shinola. Summed it up in one word; "TRUCK!" Hey Pops, will you adopt me? I don't eat much {more than enuff for three people}, and I am house broken. I do talk alot, though!
Hey Big Show, howz the project looking? I sent ya a long azz email, but you never responded. How are we gonna be 4V brothers if ya don't give up yer secrets?

UB, just checked through my box and I don't see any messages from you. I am on like 3 or 4 mailing list so I get a ton of email and usually I'll save the ones directly to me but I don't see one from ya. *shrug*
My project is coming along nicely. I was trying to have it done before the Souther Shootout but I didn't get my header situation squared away. I guess I could have if I really wanted but I decided I'd focus on the motor thats currently in the car and get the chassis sorted out a bit. I'm shooting to have it done by the end of the year and as of now, all I lack is headers and pushrods.

If I go I'll make one of my Dominion heads into a hat so everyone will know who I am.
