external oil pump question

As a result of my "Block Strength" thread, I decided on the #184 CNC block and I'll be using a wet sump external pump oiling system. The motor will be 400ish cubes, turbocharged and go through the lights around 9500rpm. Is there somewhere to read up and educate myself on the matter, or does someone have experience and a recommendation? I've seen everything from single stage pumps to 5 stage pumps..

thanks

Re: external oil pump question

That's a dry sump you are talking about.

Vizzards old bottom end book has a section on Dry Sumps, if you need some reading material.

Holy crap Brady! 9500 rpm!!!

Hey, don't forget to vent the dry sump correctly - some guys at work made that mistake and it took them 2 rebuilds to figure out that was the problem.

Call up the guys at Weaver Bro's, they will sell you the right stuff. Their products have always been great for us.

Re: external oil pump question

I didn't know enough to even ask an intelligent question. I've figured out that the single stage pump is for wet sumps, and the multi stage pumps are for dry sumps. Each pickup on a dry sump gets a stage. It isn't a "stage" exactly, it's a just multiple suctions to the pump with a common discharge..

My motor has a wet sump pan, but no provisions for an internal pump. I've found that Peterson's offers a pump.

they don't look cheap.

Re: external oil pump question

I ran an external Peterson pump on my 383 LT1. I believe it was single stage with vacumme. Made alot of pressure....like 140psi at 8500rpm. It worked very well but be warned use Aeroquip fittings(IMHO). The Russles don't like to hold a crimp at that much psi. I lost the feed line from the pump to the block on the top end. It cost me 2 yrs, $20,000 in damage, a broken hand and a concusion; when it went backwards over the wall. That was on the motor at about 130mph. Not a good day! Buy the absolute very best fittings (the Aeroquip have more thread then the Russle) maybe there is something new you like better?? Whatever... just make sure they hold. BTW the Peterson was very good but my Dart motor has an oil pump in the pan and the 4 vane pump bolted to the motor plate. I traded the Peterson for some nitrious bottles. It is a trick expensive piece(I still have the big dollar Moroso pan) that is very cool, but I made the right choice for me.

Good luck

Vince

Re: external oil pump question

We had an external wet sump on Chris's Mustang that he wrecked. It did a good job and held 100psi out the back door.
I believe he got it from Moroso.
