Exhaust crossover question

How important is equalizing the pressures between both sides of the engine with some sort of crossover or y pipe? Is there power to be had from it over just strait out the headers and if so how does that work?

Don't have any idea how it works but using a balance tube or an x-pipe can build a little low-midrange torque in my experience. Doesn't seem to do much up top, though.

I would assume it would have to do with exhaust scavaging and velocity

Hmmmmm..... can't recall ever running an h-pipe with open headers. When I run open headers I usually just put a couple lengths of striaght pipe about 16" long, as space permits, on the ends of the collectors- helps scavenging to have some pipe sticking off the end (again, don't ask me why).

I can't imagine an x or h pipe would do much with uncorked exahust, but I've never tried it.
