Engine/head Casting Numbers

Hi, I'm trying to figure out what engine is in my car, and I'm trying to find the casting numbers for the engine. I found 3 numbers and I was hoping you could tell me what they are. I found:

010
020
158

Just like that, one blow the last one. What would those numbers mean? If those aren't the #'s to identify the engine then what are they and where can I find the identification #'s? Also, where would I find the casting #'s to figure out what heads I have on my car? The engine is a 350 and that's all I know.

Thanks, Brandon

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

Those numbers are behind the timing cover right? They represent alloy content of the block. From what I've seen, those are a high nickle block numbers.

Casting numbers only tell so much about a block. Engine block casting numbers are on the rear driver side of the engine bellhousing. Head casting numbers are under the valve covers. These numbers will only give you a ballpark idea about the engine.

Suffix codes tell a lot more. The block suffix code are stamped on a pad on the block in front of the passenger side head. They will say when the engine was built, where it was built and roughly what kind of car the engine originally was in. It will also have the original vehicles last part of the vin number stamped in the pad.

There are lots of other casting marks on the block but they don't mean as much.

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

The # I got off the top of the block near the head was, V1122TDC. I'm not 100% sure it was a C, becasue it appeared to be rubbed off a little bit. However, on that site I can't seem to find anything that has a # like that?

This would mean the engine was built in Flint, MI on November 22nd of an unknown year. The last 3 Letters are the suffix code right? Where can I go where it'll tell me what those mean. With the site I was linked to I can't seem to find out what "TDC" would stand for.

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

V1122TDC

or, possibly

"V" stands for Flint
"1" stands for January
"12" stands for the day of the month
"2" stands for 1972 or 1982 or ???

TDC is an application for which I have no reference data. It could be a truck block but the early '70's information available to me shows that most applications in those years began with "C".

Good luck

1986 Camaro. It was originallly a 2.8 V6 car, but the previous owner swapped it out for a 350.

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

The number I got off my heads was 3947041. This indicates they were on either on a 302 or 350 engine between 69 and 70. Mortec said this: " Right angle casting identifier, 64cc chamber, accessory holes, good HP head." Would these be 2.02 heads? I checked on ebay and 2.02 heads also seem to have 64cc combustion chambers. Is there anyway to tell without pulling the heads?

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

if the suffix code was TDG instead of TDC it came out of a 1972 K10 or 20 according to nastyz28.com

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

041 heads are very desirable, we use them as our cores for stock head rule race classes. It's a thicker casting and takes porting well. The only factory heads that had 2.02" are called "turbo heads" by most machinists, I forget the casting number, but I have a couple on the shelf.

Re: Engine/head Casting Numbers

Would I be mistaken to recall that casting #186, found on 69 Z28 engines had straight spark plugs with 2.02 intake valves and 1.6 exhaust valves? I recall that the famous "Turbo" head with angle-plugs and big valves was casting #290. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

Also, I don't no if this matters, but my spark plugs go striaght in, not angled or anything. (annoying as hell when your working around hearders!)

That may be the casting number, I will look at them tomorrow. I do remember that Prosis shows that the casting number on the turbo heads were availible for the 69 z-28 engines like you said. I will check spark plug angles too, cause I don't remember if the turbo's are straight or angled.
