engine building tricks

i'm going that little extra effort to polish out the oil gallies on my motor, someone i used to work with mention knife-edging the crank, as well as chamfering the oil holes.

when you knife edge the crank wieghts, you do a single angle right?!
is there any trick to chamfering the oil holes? i don't want it to eat my bearings up.

i know everything has to be rebalanced, that's fine. i also plan to make a crank scraper.

any other tricks you guys can think of??

If this is a high-end forged stroker crank that may already be done. If it's a stock crank, it's probably not worth the trouble. Unless you are going to lighter pistons and/or rods, your reblance will involve some expensive heavy metal. Lots of "pain" for not much "gain".

As far as knife-edging, air-foil shaping might be better. A sharp angle (knife edge) probably scatters the oil blobs/strings rather than cutting thru them smoothly. Scraper and maybe a windage tray would be more useful.

Big chamfers on the oil holes might help, but might not. Unless you are going to a lot higher rpm than stock, the most it will do, IMO, is make you feel good. Look at a high-end Callies or Scat or equivalent crank and copy what you see.

My $.02.

Knife edge and cank scraper...that seems like doing 2 things to achieve the same goal.

Consider the fact that knife edging isnt done so much for weight reduction but rather windage control. Now if you run a windage tray, that basically does the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

In my opinion, skip the knife edging, get a good crank scraper and windage tray and consider it good.
