Cylinder head problems
Cylinder head problems
Ok so I had a trusted friend do some port work on my Dart 220R series heads and he went thin in some critical spots. I had them welded but I plan on selling them and getting a better out of the box head that takes standard valvetrain and most importantly, no porting.
I am trying to find a cylinder head that will work well with my shortblock that is already together. Specs are:
383ci, 262/266@.050, .665/625 w/ 1.5's, 12.2:1 compression with 62cc heads, 1 7/8" super comps, 1050 dominator and a single plane intake.
I am setup for 23* heads right now, I would like to stay that way. Can any of you guys give me some advice? IHI recommended AFR 210's on another forum, would they be large enough for my setup? I was looking at AFR 220's and 227's but they say they require offset rockers/shaft rockers. I am trying to stay away from this added expense. Any other heads out there worth looking at?

Re: Cylinder head problems
the dart 220 head is a pretty nice piece. I would certainly recommend a properly prepped set of darts over any out of the box deals currently availible in that price range.
Stick with what you got, but have the heads professionally checked, Would you let your friend perform heart surgery on you?

Re: Cylinder head problems
Yeah - that's a good head for that setup, but your carb choice is wrong... what is the motor going to be used in? Dominator is strictly drag race, we use a 950cfm pro series holley on our 800hp 502 pump gassers for some cubic inch vs CFM comparison...

Re: Cylinder head problems
Like I said, dominators are drag race only....if that is the only use for the car, then a dominator will be a good choice, but that is still too big unless you are turning some serious RPM. Transbrake? Converter stall?

Re: Cylinder head problems
4500 converter, no transbrake, turning 7200-7500. I will try it and a 4150 and see which I like better. I have two friends who run Dominators on the street, sounds like they aren't a lot of fun. For the most part, the only street driving this car will see is to the drag strip, and maybe downtown once in a while.
Re: Cylinder head problems
If you are planning on driving on the street at all, especially for a cruise night or such, it would be a good idea to have a 4150 tuned for that, then drop the dominator on when you get to the track.
You could always run a Predator and have the best of both worlds
(Some people may not get that joke...)

My friend I was talking about- back to back passes with a 377 (4.155x3.75 stroke, GM bowtie aluminum heads and a solid roller camshaft with a 3500 converter). Bested like 11.4's with a 1000 cfm 4150 (I think it was a race Demon) trying different jetting and tuning. Back to back passes, swapped a 1050 Dominator on and picked up 3 tenths and 3 mph. That is a big chunk of ET/MPH for anyone who has made 100 passes and thinks they have their car dialed in as fast as it will go.
I am excited, I got a great deal on the intake/carb too so if it doesn't work out, my feelings won't be hurt.
Re: Cylinder head problems
As far as the 220's, I am going to be selling them as a package. I have everything brand new to put them together: Manley Race master valves, Lunati Valve springs, Iski adjustable guideplates, titanium retainers, comp locks, comp cash caps, offset rockers, etc.
I am going to sell it as a package, welded and ready to be checked out by a machinist. If it checks out fine, someone is going to score a brand new set of heads that cost $1400 bare with $500 worth of parts to assemble them and most of the porting already done.
I just want to buy a set of assembled heads, bolt them on and go racing. If anyone is interested in the heads you can PM me, I will make you a killer deal on them.

Wouldn't that be a 406? 4.000" bore would be the 377.
