Crane valve spring compressor?
Probably not the correct forum, but here goes. Has anyone used this new spring compressor from crane?

Re: Crane valve spring compressor?
damn thats gay.
1. they want OVER $100 FOR IT?!
2. you have to turn a nut to compress the springs..
3. you can ONLY do two at a time..... great sometimes, but not always.
a much better, faster, and easier to use tool is this one:

its cheaper, it works better, it works faster, and it does clear the cowl overhang on 4thgens.

Re: Crane valve spring compressor?
Good luck with the back 4 cylinders! I am looking to do this while the heads are on the car. I have 977 springs that are 400 lbs to open. Maybe that will clear up what I am trying to do.
Price up gaskets, and your time to pull the heads and $106 does not seem that much. All I was looking for was if someone has used the tool.

Re: Crane valve spring compressor?
what im telling you is, you CAN use the tool i posted with the heads on.. and its easier to use.
the "fork" that pushes the springs, and the angle of the handle can independantly rotate 360*. so you can move it to any angle that fits.
and the handle just slips in and out like a jack handle.
its like this:
remove the rockers and pushrods for that cyl.
screw it onto the rocker stud,
put the "fork" over the valve
slip on the handle and push down.
the handle will stay down on its own. you just remove the keepers. lift the handle back up, and thats it. its off.
btw, my springs are stiffer... (im running a big solid roller cam.) and i can use my pinky finger to slowly raise and compress the springs with this tool. easy.

Re: Crane valve spring compressor?
$106 is indeed crazy, not sure what they based their pricing on. I've got the summit tool and it can be used to replace all the springs (even the back ones) with the heads on. After you get the hang of it I imagine it would be pretty quick.
I've seen people cut a single peice of steel that would be screwed down onto the rocker stud, like this $106 tool, but obviously for under $20 in parts and some cuts with a grinder.
Hope this helps,
-Christian

Re: Crane valve spring compressor?
Are you talking about SUM-906784? Your link appears to be broken up. I used one of the screw types when I changed my valve springs with the head on last winter and vow never to use that piece of junk again if I can help it.
