Post compression ratio question

I read in a post that for every pound (not sure thats right) of compression you gain, it is equal to only about 11-20 hp. If that is true, then why is a higher compression ratio so desired. Dosent it cause more detonation, and I know it requires higher octane ratings. What is the real value in the higher ratio like a 11.2:1 compared to a 9:1. Please explain??
