Carb conversion on lt1

hey guys tried search but didnt find answers yet. I have a 95 Z-28 w/AFR heads and LT1 intake.
Will a carb vortech intake work (there is a single plane race version I would like to use) so the factory GM is out.
Will there be enough room to put the distributor in while the engine is in the car already.
Will I be able to pull out the oil pump drive in back and slide it in.
I see that everybody in one of the posts was saying you can block off the opti spark hole, but is there a kit or do I just fabricate something for the hole.
Not worried about fuel lines or linkage that I can do.
On a 4l60 I know its computer controlled, I read somewhere here that some of the guys are using a modulator to control shifts. Who makes it. My first trans big$$$ slipped into a early death. I have now a TCI unit even bigger $$$$$ and don't want it to have a heart attack either.
Will I have to rewire the ignition once the computer is pulled and the wiring for the fuel pump? On Stangs I know you do once computer is pulled. Sorry for the long post just trying to save on multiple posts. This car is not a daily driver and I always loved carbs so not interested in debating EFI over carb thanks Andel

Depends upon how good of a intake you want but they can be converted. I have one right now that in a few hours will be done for a carb converstion on a LT1 motor. I will e-mail you some pics of that. You need to have the heads off to go with the intake so that they can be modified some to have the intake bolt up to them also.

You can put a distributor on back there, most likely you need to install it on the engine and then drop the engine in, or acutally put it on the K-member and then rasie that into the car.

There is a GM Opti block off plate.

These GM part numbers might be helpful.

12367600 - Front Cover/Plug.

12497316 - 4L60E and 4L80E Transmission Controller (Needs throttle position sensor for carbed applications).

A lot of cars that I see have a removable section of the cowl for distributor installation.

Hope this helps,

Daren

There is a MSD Pro Billet Distributor that works, it's the Crab Cap Model. I think it comes with a bronze gear but that can easily be changed, unless you run a billet cam, which wouldn't hurt anything here.

Bret is doing my super vic intake right now. As for the distributor I'm going to a MSD crank trigger and a low profile crab distributor.
I went to a th400 trans also. My car is on the wild side of street driving as it only will see less than 500 miles per year. As for under the cowl fitment I cut back the hole cowl and deleted the windshield wipers and a ton of other things. Theres no way the carb and intake would fit. Like I said this car is on the far side of extreme for a street car.

Thanks for the replies. A lot of work but I will give it some serious thought. I just bought a MSD digi6, coil, and quick connect to install. Hope this box will give it a little easier running.

Ok some questions answered, thankyou. Now will I be able to pull out the oil drive with the motor in the car, and will I be able to put the distributer in with the motor already in the car. I noticed that 383 Blwn bird said that you don't have wipers, is it because you didn't want them or trying to get them to fit. I don't mind cutting the cowl but really don't want to lose wipers. Can I just take my AFR's off and put regular aftermarket heads and then use a nice intake or do I still have to worry about reverse cooling thanks. I can just about sell my AFR's for another regular set.

I did away with wipers because I have a cowl hood back to the windshield, and this car is gutted, everything that added weight is gone. The heads have to be reused with the block just have someone like Bret convert a supervic or such to work with the heads you have. You don't have to go to the extreme like I did but my car is rally pushing itfor a street car.

Then you might as well go to a tradtional SBC block. The heads need to be revearse cool to work on a LT1/4 block.

Well I'm still interested in converting possibly. How much was that conversion. Is that a specific intake, all the ones I seen had the waterneck still there. I can see how you did the holes but what about the waterneck or am I not realizing that there is a intake without the water neck? Now if I was a blonde I could just say "I'm so confused"

Yeah,

Those pics are pre installing the Bauer Racing Logo Plate and grinding off the Edelbrock name and part numbers.

We did start with a Super Vic, but we could do any intake. The Super Vic is a favortie of mine and it's the best choice for the most bang for the buck. The work costs more than the intake does so you might as well start with something good.

Yeah we cut the waterneck off since a LT4 doesn't need it, do we have to? No, but it's a much cleaner setup and it makes my job eaiser so why not?

Yeah any single plane setup needs the heads drilled and taped for 2 bolt holes to make bolt up. Nothing big but it needs to be done.
