Re: Broke 3 valve springs....Solid Roller

Talked to the gentleman at Lazer Cams, he said that the 999 spring is a poor choice for street motors. It is very brittle and cracks easily. What most likely happened was the engine was not up to operating temperature and was revved to high. He recommended some of Lazer Cams spring that would be perfect for me.

Evidently the guy who put the cam in the first time didn't use Lazer's recommendation, huh? Ask him why he used Comp 999s made from H-11 tool steel.

I'm not sure that "It is very brittle and cracks easily" is the correct analysis for H-11 springs that cost as much as 999s. H-11 (Vasco-Jet) tool steel is used on very high performance very high-rpm endurance spring which you shouldn't even be warming up at 6800. Of course I'm also not surprised they have the "perfect" spring. 999s run well over $300 a set. The new ones should be a lot less.

FWIW, Lazer has a 999 also. Coincidently it's also H-11 material. What spring number did the Cam Wizard recommend?

I know you keep a Comp catalog in the bathroom OS. Committed it to memory yet?

The 999s are a little more expensive than the 943 PacAlloys, so we're not talking chump change cheapies. That seems like a lot of spring ($ wise) for a 6800 rpm SR.
Well that brings up a good question. He says he hasn't reved it past 6800 but what is the peak for this cam? Perhaps it's 7200?

I'm not the cam guy, so it's just my opinion. I'd look elsewhere for bad harmonics, etc.but first I'd ask the cam manufacturer for a spring recommendation. If it was the 999's I'd ask them more questions about my failure.

My $.02
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and just say it.... someone speced the springs on their own... without asking for a reccomendation.
