I'm guessing he was clearancing for the 383's stroke.

If I were in your situation, I'd measure the main bores and the bottoms of the cylinder bores (make multiple perpendicular measurements so that you will know whether or not the bores are really circular), assemble the engine with heads and a crank, and fill it one side at a time. Then recheck the measurements and let us know what you find.
