I have a fresh rebuilt 454, I did my cam break in procedure and it had a small lifter tick. so i adjusted them a little tighter and the noise got louder. So i did took the valve covers of and spun the engine and you can see the rockers slowly drop about 1/8 inch. Then i lossened them and the push rod moved up about 1/4 inch as soon as the pressure came of. Could i have an entire bad set or could i have just wiped my cam?

 

Did you set the lash with the lifters pumped up?

 

Were the cam bearings replaced with the rebuild?

 

Yes i did it cold and hot. replaced cam bearings also have roller rockers. I pulled the intake off and the cam looks fine perfect wear pattern.

 

I'd recommend just starting over and resetting each to zero lash using the "method one" on shoebox's page at the link below and go from there...if the problem is still there, you might have a lifter problem....but use this procedure just to make sure you are back at square one, because you have made more adjustment now. This procedure has been my method for many years, and works perfectly every time. Report back to let us know if it's still there when you're done, and good luck!

Ok i called comp cams and the cam that i got magnum 286h requires shorter push rods. they didnt bother to say anything when i ordered the kit. so they are going to warranty the cam and lifters. thanks for the help.

 

Very good on Comp's part. They've always been a stand-up company in my experience.

It's always a good idea to mock everything up with an adjustable pushrod, just to be sure. There are a number of variables that can change the optimum pushrod length once everything's together.
