Post 700R4 experts, I need help

I am rebuilding a 700R4 and I am running into some problems, I did not tear down the tranny and I am using the Haynes Techbook GM Automatic transmission overhaul.

1. I can't tell what year tranny I have, the casting #'s don't match up with anything that the book is telling me. can you tell me where i should be looking to find the right casting #'s? (section 4)

2. I start installing the first set of plates and clutches in the tranny case and it says to install the waved plate first (8D-25 step 8D.165), I look around and don't have anything that looks like a plate that is waved kinda like a spring plate (is that what I should be looking for?)I see a note that says on there isn't a waved plate on 86 and earlier models. So I am taking it that I have an 86 and earlier model...

3. I get to the input clutch assembly and install the first set of plates and clutches no problem and for the second set it says again install the waved plate (8D-32 atep 8D.219), does this apply to all models, there is no note and no waved plate???

4. I jump ahead to the reverse input clutch assembly and start puting it together and it says on 87 and later models it uses a Bellevill-style (semi-cone shaped)plate instead of the waved plate (8D-35 step 8D.239), so now I am like WTF what year do I have?? I also notice that for this assembly I have 3 plates and 5 clutches, Is that normal (I added one plate from the old set).

Thanks in advance
John

1. If you look on the pass side pan rail there is a code that will tell you what year it is. They are still using same system on 4L60Es today

2. The plate you are look ing for wouls be twice the thickness as the others. Yes earlier model did not have them . make sure your pack clearance is good when you finish the pack

3. again some do and some do not. Cutch pack clearance is important. there are many veriations on this pack so be carefull.

4. John later models have an aluminum clutch piston. Aluminum Pistons use a Belleville spring and early uses a Wave. Late stacks belleville plate clutch,plate clutch, plate clutchplate clutch and then pressure plate. Early uses a wave instead of the belleville and bottom plate;

Good luck!

Thanks for the help, I figured out what they were talking about, the plates I was looking for do have a slight wave to them and if you don't know what your looking for (like me) you'll miss it.

Now I got everything to gether except for the valve body and pump. I am stuck on the pump, It doesn't seem to want to sit all the way down, it stops at the outer pump seal and doesn't seem to want to go any more, i don't want to force it. Is there a trick to this or do I have something jacked up?

Ok as long as your 6 sealing rings are good and not sticking out and catching here is a trick

I put some lube on the outter O-ring and on the pump sealing surface for O-ring. get pump back down to this point. Tap the pump down lightly with the handle end of a dead blow hammer or any hammer

Good luck!

Put the pump assembly in your freezer for an hour.
The cold will shrink you seals making it easier to seat your pump.

well i got the pump in, hope everything is ok. Is it true that the inner shaft should only turn one way?

Everything seems to be good, I got the right amount of end play in the shaft, putting it together all the clearencess added up right, went together with alittle bit of trouble but not to bad for my first rebuild. Now my only question is about the shaft and should it really only turn in one direction?

Thanks again you guys have been a really big help.

If it is in park yes it will only turn one way If you use a pair of pliers it will turn the other way just harder

Good luck!
