Exclamation WTF?! Why the overheating!!

Alright im seriously tired of this crap.
I have a Be-Cool radiator,my fans are grounded,a 3-core intercooler,160thermostat, yes the air dam is on, yes the radiator is clear of any and all debris, why does this car get so incredibly hot. Beat on it a little bit and it goes to 240 almost instantly. If I let the car sit in my drive way and leave the air conditioning on it will overheat. What is the deal here? Temperature gurus please please help

The answer is simple. It's that darn three-core intercooler!! Initially, I assumed two causes: 1) Severely impeded airflow because of the shear mass of the IC and 2) What airflow that passes through the IC on the way to the radiator is heated significantly by the IC. I did a simple experiment. First, I disconnected the D1SC. Now, the air passing through the IC is not heated by the blower. I observed my engine operating temps and there was no negligible change. Then I removed the IC. I could not believe how much cooler my engine ran. I was convinced that the cooling problem is due to lack of airflow.

In fact, I even have two pusher fans in addition to the stock dual fan setup, done everything to my cooling system to aid the problem, but my results are identical to yours. I know it gets hot in Albuquerque, almost as hot as Tucson, so.... Read about my solution here:

I am in the middle of this project today (06-24-02) but have one pic of the installed twin IC's (with no tubing yet). If you care to see it, I'll be glad to e-mail it to you. In the meantime, my blower and IC have been removed and can run the A/C even on the hottest 108+ degree days without fear of overheating.

Thumbs up

You know what, that makes so much frigggin sense that it hurts. I have a visual image of how this should look and work. This is a great idea but are the twin IC's smaller than my 3 core because they will have to be to fit in the corners and not restrict air in the middle towards the radiator. Good Luck man and damn good thinkin. BTW plz send pics if you pull that off.

On my initial test drive after installing my ProCharger back in January, 2001 (it was about 60 degrees), the first thing I noticed was my engine temp. It was about 190* once fully warmed up. That's with a 160* t-stat!! So I knew I wasn't getting airflow to the radiator. When I installed a pair of pusher fans, my temp lowered to about 180*. But I still was not comfortable.

I then contacted ATI and told them my concern. They swore up and down it was not the fault of the intercooler. I lived with this condition all last summer -- not being able to use my A/C.

....are the twin IC's smaller than my 3 core because they will have to be to fit in the corners and not restrict air in the middle towards the radiator.

Yes. Each intercooler is approximately 12" x 12" x 3.5". Once I determined the best location for them, I fabricated the mounting hardware. They fit like they were designed for a third gen Camaro.

I'd kill to run at 180. Damn I'm seeing 220-240 constantly. If i beat on it at all the car gets hot in a hurry. Im sure your right about the airflow. I hit the freeway at 70-80mph and it stays nice and cool. When your twin IC swap is done, you should send ATI a bill for the work you've had to do for them.

lol my z28 runs at 220 ALL the time and i dont have working AC, the fan kicks on and keeps it at that temp. These cars normally run hot..lol its gonna be fun when i get my air conditioning charged.

220 is not really hot. Alot of cars run 210-220 as their normal operating temp. It is very likely the intercooler like he said, but just to make sure, you did make sure those fans are actually coming on right?
