Hey all.. I need some brakes.. front disk, rear drum, for my Camaro.

I would like some over-sized drums for the rear(for better stopping power), and don't care about the front.
2 conditions though..
1.) Need to be GOOD brakes that I can depend on.
2.) Need to be CHEAP brakes, I don't have much money at all to spend on them..

Just get a whole 4th gen rear with disk brakes, posi, and better gears.

Or better yet go find someone with a junker Camaro & grab the rear end off of that. Remember no matter what, Always grab the ebrake as well for they are NOT interchangable.

If I was you I would find a LS1 rear end.

Please note that I am 16.. an LS1 anything is not really a feasible plan

 

Are you looking for an entire brake system? Just pads? Calipers and rotors too? Try being a little more specific, and I'm sure everyone will keep an eye out for deals for you.

As far as the rear drums go, GM has used the same size drum (to the best of my knowledge) on all of their mid and full size cars for years and years. The best upgrade you can do there is to search the yards for aluminum drums. They are silver in color, and the cooling fins around the drum are noticibly taller. They also save approx 7 lbs. per side of the stock drums.

I am looking for Calipers, rotors, and drums.
I have seen in CHP, Hot Rod, or something like that, oversized drums. The are like, massive compared to stock. Just don't remember how much they are, or where to get them.

Who made the Aluminum drums? What cars did they come on?

 

No the Ebrakes are NOT interchangable from the disc to drums.

My brother in law found that out when he swapped out rear ends in his 90 rs (drum brakes) to my husbands 87 Iroc-z (disc brakes)




I am not talking about getting an LS1 I am just suggesting that you get the rear end out of one from a yard.

 

Remember, an LS1 rear end is wider and your wheels will not fit. Swap the disk brakes off of the LS1 rear to your car.

Yes, I relize that.. but an LS1 anything will be WAAAY over my budget.

How would the wheels not fit? How much do you think I could get the brake setup for? Won't I also need the master cylander and other assorted things?

 

The route I went was a 1989 9-bolt rear with 11.655 rotors and Alum PBR calipers (all that was needed were the parking brake cable & proportioning valve) and for the Fronts just upgraded to better pads & SS brake lines (same for the rear). You will have a better braking system for less money and problems then using the 4th gen rear.

 

You can upgrade your drum brakes easily and cheaply. Here`s what you can do to make them better than stock for only a few bucks more. First get some new wheel cylinders...Camaro`s stock cylinders are kinda small at a 3/4 bore so, Get wheel cylinders for a s series blazer, late 80`s will do, they have a 7/8 bore and can put more pressure on the rear shoes and have that same PIA clip that holds them on. Like 12$each. Secondly Buy two sets of rear shoes, wagners are 27$ per set, Parts masters are like 15 each...you`ll be taking one set back soon don`t worry. Get a new hardeware kit(10$) and new adjuster`s if yours don`t work freely. New drums can be had for around 20 a side if yours can`t be re-machined, Aluminum ones would be great but they are getting hard to find with enough material to machine and still be safe. Now assemble the rear brakes with the oversized wheel cylinders and then use both long shoes from each box along with your new hardware. Now bleed out the system with new fluid. Once your done you can test drive it back to the auto parts store and return one set of shoes (all the short ones) tell`em you thought you needed two sets LOL This will get the back in shape for a decent amount + it`s better than factory



Unless you go into to some sorta conversion on the front , your stuck with the 10.5 rotors...really there`s not too much you can do with the front on a budget. maybe get some good pads and some new calipers...turn your rotors too. you can do all that for around 75 ducks
