When braking in a new engine

Just broke mine in and here is what I did....I would crank it up and let it run for about 2 minutes...Get on the road and cruised like normal. Normal driving should be enough to give you different RPMS for the break in. After 500 miles, I changed the oil (which was VERY thin...I guess that is how it is made) to Castrol GTX 10W30 and then cruised for about antoher 300 miles. Then I put the get down on it and BROKE MY TRANNY!!!!!! Oh well tranny will be done in the morning and I will have a fresh new motor and a Bullet proof 700r4

1. Prime it with oil, either by a drill with the dist. out or pull the coil wire and crank it a couple of times.(Don't use sythetic oil for at least 500miles or poor ring sealing may result.)
2. If it's "NOT" a roller cam motor you should fire it up and keep varying the rpms between 2000 and 2500 for 15-20 minutes. This does a couple of things: a)ensures adequate oil during break in. b)keeps the cam at a constant temp and sorta work hardens it and lifter faces. c)helps seat rings quicker.(If it's a roller cam motor skip to #4).
3. After that, and you've got it to idle out good. Change the oil. The fileter will get a lot of break in metal in it.
4. Take it out on a back road and do several 20 to 50 mph roll-on blasts to seat the bearings and rings better. But don't exceed 55mph or do Interstate driving in it until the 100 mile mark.
5. At the 100 mile mark, change the oil again.
6. Drive it normally for 400 more miles, don't "flog" it but don't baby it either.
7. At the 500 mile mark change the oil again and consider it broke in! and Have fun!...

I have friends who just broke in there cam and took it easy for 15-20 miles then went out and hammerewd on it. He has about 20k on the 383 stroker and it doesnt smoke. Some builders say that you should break it in like you are going to drive it. I do not like this idea and will definately break my motor in for 500 miles. Then change the oil and I ll be good to go.
