Whats the difference between a 92 RS and Z28?

I know that the RS could have a throttle body injected 305 that didn't make squat for power and I know the Z28s had bigger shocks and sway bars and better engines. Did the automatic RS camaros have a 700R4 or did they have a 200R4? If anyone has a 4 speed automatic RS if they look at there tranny pan and if it is almost square it should be a 700R4 but if it is long and skinnier at the back end then it is a 200R4. What transmission and other differences are there between RS and Z28?

they both had 700r4 except the RS 6 cylinder. Some of the noticeable differences that you didnt mention was the hood and the wing. As far as the engines go, I believe the Z's had a tuneport 5.7 and the RS was a throttlebody 5.0. (once again except the 6'er)

Z's had a tuned port 5.0 standard, 5.7 was optional. Z's also had a better cam, plus it's better to have an injector for every cylinder than 2 injectors for all 8, on top of the differences already mentioned. At any rate, all that added up to about a 2 second difference in the 1/4, but much of that is due to the fact that the RS's induction suffocates the car. For all purposes, a throttle body injection unit is as good as or better than a carb, imo. Check out thirdgen.org for the ultimate tbi mods, or http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/spo_t...y_central.html if you want the detailed story behind TBI's. From what I know, there isn't much if anything outside of nitrous that you can do to get a TBI 5.0 well into or below a 13. I plan on getting there eventually, tho, i hope!

2 seconds is 2 seconds............i added a full exhaust, better suspension, custom cai and slightly bumped up fuel psi and i run with mild lt1's no problem at the track.

besides the engine and other things that have been mentioned there are other factors.

the rear gear
1-le models have aluminum driveshafts(easily replaceable)
different tires(not that these will be stock anyway)
upgraded rims, although some or most rs models have them as well
totally different interior (seats, guages, etc)
different cpu
better brakes

and the list goes on.................

there are alot of things that make a z different from an rs, there are many things that make a L98 z different from both.

you get what you pay for; but then again if you are going to mod or are looking for a cheap alternative to start then i think the 305 z is the best thing to get. if i were to do it again or mod a car like mine i would have went with the best body i could find for the cheapest. i'd probably look for an early 4 cylinder or definately a v6 rs. i would have been able to build my car for half the price that way and save on insurance.

The V6 used a 700R4 too.

Yeah all used 700-R4 unless manual.
The RS's were slow and the Iroc-Z's were not; thats the difference =D. The TBI can be worked however - but work it you must just to see times that a stock 5.0 TPI can achieve with decent driving.

They all had 700R4 overdrive transmissions, except some 82-83 models which had the TH200C non-overdrive, and the 89 turbo trans am, which used the 2004R. The V6 and V8 700R4 were different on the inside (the V8 model is beefier) and they had different bellhousing patterns, so they're not interchangeable.

TPI is light years ahead of TBI in terms of performance, but you can make anything fast with a lot of money. And the relatively low price of thirdgens now adays, you can find TPI models for almost the same price as base models.
