what type of speedometer sensor??

Hey, i'm asking this question for my friend.

what type of sensor is used on an 1998 firebird GTA to send the speedometer reading from the transmission to the digital dash? is it a speedometer cable, or is it a sensor, or is it just electronic? thanks

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

88 should be a cable running from the back of the cluster to the transmission. its a fairly easy part to replace.

most difficult part is getting the cluster out, and once you have done that once or twice it becomes a breeze.

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

analog

there is a plastic gear inside the tranny that can be changed if you change rear end gearing or the speedo doesn't read correctly. different colors correspond to different ratios so that your speedo can be recalibrated for gearing other than stock.

Cool, and so this applies to both digital and regular dashes on the GTA right?? One more thing, the speedometer cable leads to the gear in the tranny right? This speedometer cable, is it an electronic sending unit?? Thanks.

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

i have no idea about the digital dash

for the regular gauge, the cable should actually be a sheath for a solid square line running through the middle of it, one end plugs into the tranny and the other into the speedo, the inside part rotates and the sheath protects it.

nope everything should be the same as long as you are going to use a cluster from pre-1990. Look on ebay or a junkyard for 115mph clusters, very easy swap just pull the old out and pop the new one in.

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

89Vert is correct, Pontiacs changed to electronic speedos in 1986, while the Chevys didnt change until 1990. If you change the rear end gears, you'll need to get new speedo gears in the tailshaft of the tranny to match what you put in the rear end. Do a search and you'll find the correct speedo gears.
The unit itself is a 2000 pulse per mile generator.

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

jayman, i was looking around on ebay and saw alot of "aftermarket" ones that say they are for the year i am looking for but go up to 160 or around there, are the "aftermarket" ones the same, meaning i wont need to change anything else?
I dont understand why they put a speedo that maxes out at 85 mpg on a car that is capiable of going close to 200
