What transmission is in a '84 Z28?

Its an automatic car. My cousin just picked it up for $400 and is going to part it out. I'm interested in the automatic overdrive tranny for my dad, but just want to make sure that the tranny in the car is solid and can hold up to some power. (If we get it, it will be put behind a GM 330hp crate motor.)

So, what kind of tranny is in that car and will it hold up to +350ft-lb of torque?

You are trying to mate up an AOD to a 350 Chevy??? Good luck. You will need adapter plates, if there are any like that. IIRC, AOD trans are for Fords if you look at the link.

Try getting www.rosslertrans.com to modify your existing 700R4. They took mine and made it hold 400+ in torque for 3.5 years with me doing WOT runs, several times a day all year round unless there was snow or ice on the ground.

Whoops, i shouldnt have used abrevations. I didnt mean a Ford AOD. What I meant was the automatic tranny in the 84 Z28 has a over drive, right? IF so, what kind of tranny is it? A TH200 maybe, like what was later put in the Grand Nationals?

The deal is, my dad currently has a '55 Chevy with a 350 in it, and a 4 speed Muncie. He's tired of shifting gears and wants an automatic. We've picked the crate engine, just havent found a transmission yet. If we could get the tranny out of this 84 Z28 and it work fine, we coudl rebuild it and hopefully come out cheaper than buying a brand new 700R4.

How many miles does the 700R4 have on it? Even an older model 700 can hold up fine - mine lasted over 180K miles (operated flawlessly when removed) , with 50K of that being behind an engine twice as powerful as stock. That's not always the case though. If its got high miles or has been abused, its a gamble. It may hold, it may not. There's only one way to know
