What should timing on a 383 be?
Just curious as to what my initial timing should be. One of the guys at AutoZone said a 383 should be at about 17, and I'm at about 12 right now. He said if I changed it up it would run cooler, but that didn't make sense to me. Any thoughts?

Depends on what type of distributor you have.
If you're using a stock HEI dist., they come with 20 degrees of advance already built into them so about 12-14 degrees of initial timing would be you're starting point. Small blocks like anywhere from 32-38 degrees of total advance timing. If you're running a aftermarket distributor, you'll have to find out what the advance is built into it unless you have an adjustable vacuum advance cansister then the adjustments and settings are easy. This info is based on the fact that you installed the cam straight up.
