What kinda carb should I be looking for?
I have a 383 that is almost complete. I am looking for a carb and intake to finish it up. Question is, what size carb should I go with. I am hoping for about 400 hp and about the same tq. I also would like to go with a single plane intake. Torquer 2 maybe.
Is this a good idea? any sugestions

750 cfm minimum, that's a no brainer. As far as type most will probably say holley or one of the other aftermarket ones. I use a Q-jet. They are capable of 750 cfm and are easy to tune with hangers and metering rods.
If you saw hot rod TV last weekend they did a carb swap from a stock Q-jet to a holley. The motor is no monster they where using, it was an old 307, but the comparison was good. The stock Q-jet made 172 rwhp. They put the holley on out of the box and it mad like 162 rwhp. They tuned the **** out of the holley to get it back up to 172 rwhp. Kind of fun to watch. Wish I had a dyno in the garage.

I think the box stock holley made 168hp, but that's ok. They really do jet them way too rich from the factory most of the time... All the tuning they did on the carb was jetting.
I would stick to a 750cfm holley for a mild 383 if you plan to drive it much.

Alright. Holley is what I was leaning towards anyway. I believe that I want to go with mechanical secondaries also. This a good choice? I also saw a lot of different models of holley 750's

A family member of mine runs an aftermarket carb shop, they basically take Holly models and make them work like they are supposed to, they generally run about 20% or so more expensive than the un-tuned out of the box Holley. Ive been up there to the shop and they have showed me all the mail they get sent back from people telling them how bad *** the carbs made their cars.
