They recommend 10w-30... but I've been using 40 weight or therabouts. I drive my car far too hard to use the thinner stuff. My car runs rather hot as well, so the 30 would lean out too much.

Just my two cents.

I run 20W50 in my 1989 GTA. I have almost 200K km's (120,000 miles) on my engine, so I run a heavier oil. I was running 10W30, but in this heat - and the fact these cars run hot - the oil pressure is better with a heavier oil and the engine sounds smoother. With higher mileage, things loosen up a bit inside the engine and the heavier oil helps with a bit more 'cushion'.

wait a minute stop the truck.Do you understand what 10w30w means. The first number represents the weight when cold the second when hot.On start up you want that oil to flow.So I believe your better off with 10-40 over 15-30.The 10-40 will flow better on start up and be thicker when it heats up.20-50 that is some thick stuff.Maybe you want to try some syn. oil its alot better than plain dino oil.Right now I am runnung 0w40w.If you want to know about oil do a search on Phatman he is a resident guru on oil.

Geezer, where did you get Mobil1 0W40? The only place I have seen it is at a Mercedes Benz dealership. I have seen 0W30 at Wally World, etc but I have been trying to get 0W40 and the closest I can get is a 55 gal drum.

sae has a whole rating system on oil that has been around for years! me, since i care about my engines, i run synthetic, and you can go to www.redline.com and they will tell you all about oil and BTW they do have the best product around and will answer all your questions about it. look at it this way..the new enzo ferrari ($750,000) runs a shell oil product that is a synthetic and cost $60 per quart and if you use some other oil, it voids the warranty. the engine cost $175,000. as you can tell, engine oil is important!

well i hot an 87 GTA L-98 350tpi.
in all my V-8's in start out with 20w-50oil and a 2qt filter.
and see what the oil psi dose and leaks and how is uses it.
now on my 87 GTA it after roding up anddown the ave. idles hot in gear at15psi with 20w-50 so i'm thinking of going to amsoil 20w-50 and if there is now improove ment i'm going to take up amsoil synthetic sae60.
mos of my stuff run's the sae 60any way.
but a few are cool with the 20w-50.
but for me and my driveing habbit's thicker oil work's for me.
but your car and your driving habbit's my differ and rrquier thinner oil or maybe heavyer oil.
but ofr the most i run 20w-50.
my third gen f-body's end up at sae60 more less cause of high miles and high abuse.

I can only go by what you print.20w 50w is to much for what you said you are running it in(l98)unless your bearings are shot to shet causing huge clearence issuse's and your to poor to do a rebuild you have no need to run that weight on the street in a street motor. How much of an azz to you drive on the street anyway.Do you drive around town and on the highway between 3400rpms and 5200rpms like you would on a high speed road course. The most you should run is a 40w oil in that thing. How good on a cold start up do you think that 20-50 flow's?Before you call somebody a dumbass look at the fact's at hand you know it all, wet behind the ear 21yr old.

it run's at 15psi hot at idle with 20w-50synthetic oil = about 10w40 regular.and the 2qr filter it's worn and lose according to the gauge. i could rebuild it but why rebuild a 350 when i got a ready to go 406 waiting for the 350 too blow #7 rod threw the block.
or if you know some body that will give me $800 for the engine with the tpi intake and all. then i'll pull it now.???

There is a guy over here in jersey called ask frank first in south river who has a speedshop/hotrod junkyard that is always interested in stuff like that. With a rebuild that makes a good swap for older muscle car's.Don't have number off hand but you can always call 411
