What Cars Can I Find A 9Bolt Rear???
I'm looking for a 9Bolt rear. There are several salvage yards in my area. Which means many many many cars. Most of the yards I've seen the cars still have rearends in them. I've been wearing out work pants getting down to get a visual of the rearend. It would help if I knew what cars came with the Austrailian 9Bolt. Thank You all in advance...
85-90 was the production years. I am not sure of the exact options, but check www.thirdgen.org and/or www.9bolt.com

I know that these cars had BW 9-bolts:
1987/89 all 350 TPI cars Camaro/Firebids 2:77 & 3:27
1986/89 305 TPI cars with a 5-SP Camaro/Firebirds 3:45
There may be others, but this is the main group. Happy hunting with the 3:45 being the rarest.

The G92 and B2L cars now recieved the Borg-Warner HD 7.75 inch rear end which was produced by Holden's limited of Austrailia. These units can be identified by their 9 bolt differential cover which has a rubber plug. The Borg-Warner logo was also cast into the bottom of the differential case. These rear axles came with tapered rather than straight roller bearings and a cone clutch instead of a disk clutch limited slip unit. All of these units were painted black from the factory, as opposed to the others which were bare metal.

Heres a few other things to look for:
VIN 10th digit 8 or F from 1985-1990 cars. Most of them had a 9 bolt and disk brakes. Auto cars came with 3.27 or 2.77 snd 5 speed cars 3.45 or 3.70...
Look for 89-up for the better PBR brakes.
Expect to pay $200-$400 depending on condition.

What makes the 3:45 such a hot item (excuse my ignorance). As far as the brakes goes I'm planning to upgrade to BAER anyway. I'm just looking for a bulletproof rear with disc brakes. I'm not building a 1/4 mile car. I'm more into TOP END...
My car has one of those 9-bolt rear ends. The posi doesn't seem to work any more.
That rubber plug dries out and starts leaking after a while. You have to replace the thing and it's a dealer-only part. Thank god it only costs a couple of bucks.

If you find a 89 9-bolt you will have the best rear disc brakes put on 3rd Gen car. Alum PBR calipers and 11.655 rotors the same as the 1LE. Other years its a crap shoot on what condition there in.
How do I tell the difference from a 87' to a 90'? I have a 91' and all the 87' to 90's look the same to me... What about the 4Gen's? Do they have tough rears? Or would I do better with a 89' like you mentioned???

Also 4th gen rear ends are different width than 3rd gens. You'd have to use 4th gen wheels. And maybe a few other modifications.
A 9-bolt is also stronger than a 4th gen 10-bolt. The 3.45 is prized because of the better ratio and the fact that they're hard to find...as I recall they only came in the G92 305/T5 cars and the TTA's.
An '89 3.45 is the "white elephant" of 9-bolts, because it has the primo ratio as well as the PBR brakes. If you're going to Baer brakes anyway don't spend the extra money on an '89...just look for a 3.45 or 3.27 rear. The 2.77's are a dime a dozen, and you can always change the gears, but a gearset for a 9-bolt costs around $300.
