want to charge my l98

want to charge my l98
just a few questions about the l98 engine compared to the lt1. i have a 87 iroc with an l98 in it and don't really like it's limited capability. i have owned two 95 z28's and prefer the lt1's power-band over the l98. i had originally wanted to sale the l98 and by an lt1 for a swap, but reading some of the threads in here, some of you in here think that it would be cheaper and better to strap a blower and a few other mod's on the l98 and i would be able to blow lt1's and ls1's away. i am all ears. i was looking to spend about $1500 on an lt1 and some other crap, but this sounds way funner. i want to charge my l98 now, so please tell me what i will need to get my hp up.
i have:
l98
700r4
the motor only has 40,XXX on it
anything will help???

i'll be honest with you since i asked the same question when i registered here with my stock l98. if your motor is running good invest in a good supercharger and run a normal amount of boost. adapt only the few things necessary to make it work which isn't much and call it a day.
had i known what i know now i never would have messed with the expense and hassle of motor swaps and what not.
get the car down into the mid 12's and be happy with it. i particularly like prochargers like the d1sc but everyone will have their opinions.
good luck.

and none of it is as worth while and more power adding then a supercharger. the bottle goes empty and needs to be refilled. the motor parts will cause you to take chances with dependability.
not saying things can't be done and for alot cheaper the a supercharger but the truly best bang for buck is the charger. wish i had known better.....

thanks guys. i will definitly be supercharging my l98, the only question is which system to go with. and i would like to know what i specifically need to do to my stock engine to get it to accept decent boost without killing her. about the nitrous, i've had systems on every car i have owned, and thouroghly enjoy it, but i think it is time to try something new. if all else fails, i have enouph nitrous crap around my garage to scrape together a complete kit. again, what supercharger do you recommend for the l98, what psi, and what kind of horses am i looking at from a stock l98 and said charger...

Dude, the 700 R4 isn't going to last behind the kind of torque you're going to be looking at with a blown L98, and the stock rearend probably won't be far behind it. I'd say you can probably get away with 8 PSI or so. You're probably looking at mid 300's in the hp department, and mid 400's in the torque range. Plus you get that awesome blower whine.

i really like the d1sc by procharger that is intercooled. go with the twin intercooler upgrade and plumb your nitrous to them. you could keep the boost between 6-8 psi which would be plenty and then hit the nitrous for that extra bit of cooling when you need it and no extra strain on the motor with the nitrous. i've seen 300 horse at the wheel with 8 psi no problem a few times.
a well maintained stock 700-r and 10 bolt will be fine as long as you don't abuse it......throw sticky tires and hard launches at every light and kiss it bye bye.

i had my doughts.... thanks for the tip 97WS6SCharged. i want to get my mitts on a t-56, but nobody wants to let one go. same storey with a newer 10 bolt with 3:42's and disc brakes. i guess only time will tell. upon replacing the drive train, you think the l98 could handle more like 400hp 450-500ftlbs of torque in it's stock trim? if not, i attend UTI in chicago, and it wouldn't be too difficult for me to beef up the bottom end a little. also, would it help to slap an lt1 intake on the l98 and work the heads? couldn't hurt right?

Negative on the CC306 and a blower. Not a good cam for that app. You can get really close to your power goals, but you're going to need to change the intake to something that will breathe above 5000 rpm (ie, ditch the TPI). Ok, everyone flame me for stating the obvious. Also, I would stay away from the self contained superchargers, they tend to leak (or atleast the P1SCs have been known to).
I would definately look into beefing up the bottom end. Boost is addictive. I already want more and I've only had my setup back together since yesterday (no lie). As far as the cam goes, if you switch to a miniram or LT1 intake or HSR, I would not hesitate to tell you to go with the 224/236 from Comp. It's an excellent blower grind with no valve overlap so you don't blow your boost out the exhaust pipes.

I saw a stock L98 with a blower making 8lbs of boost once. Guy said he ran 104 in the 1/4. 104 is good for lower 13's. I hit 13.7 at 100 before so another 4 mph should get you closer to the 12's. I'd say, stick a cam in there ground for a supercharged application, and slap a SC on there. You'll be in the 12's in no time. The TPI under boost is a whole nother story. Its not as bad when its boosted.
